All I know is that there will be riots if Wordle is down for a day.

NYT has a good recipe section. Other than that...let them learn to code.

All those detailed obituaries not getting inches of print; important people will just have to stop dying.
Maybe the thousand anointed ones need to look at other major big city newspapers. They are literally giving e subscriptions away. Right now I read three big city dailies for $ 18 for half a year subscriptions not for each, for all three. They are working to keep their readerships up. None of those three depend on feeds from the NYTimes.
The Science section of the Times might be missed, except with certain real scientific pubs going free (PLOS, etc.) if you have an interest in something scientific, you can get the info AS PUBLISHED, not as sieved through and bent to Times point of view.

Oh no! What will we ever do with the New York Times spreading fake news?

Not trying to be “that guy” but they still have plenty of great journalists. Problem is the scourge that is social media as you said. No one reads the legit material.
It’s all speed to market, better to be first than right. It’s easier for people to read a clip on Twitter or TD than a full article and consider sources. And the clicks…

Is this the same group of people that expected Twitter to fail since Musk streamlined the staff?
The problem with any essential object is that once it has been shown that enemy that essential or irreplaceable object isn’t there and people realize that no, in fact the works didn’t end, that object now loses the protected status.
Be it The NY Times or buggy whips, once the world realizes you are no longer essential for day to day life and instead are just a luxury or an outdated facet of days gone by, your power within the market and the psyche of the customer base diminishes. Some products rebound as a niche object or luxury good while others get replaced as it becomes obvious that the works via technology has passed them by.
The NY Times staff need to be real careful because there is probably a large swath of their paying customers that may decide that the alternatives they find to fill their niche while they sit out a news day might not be so bad..
