First you watch, then you warn. Not rocket science chief.

Or, the NWS could use different, intuitive language so that people don’t have to read an explanation to understand what is going on

By doing that, everyone would have to learn that there are completely new terms and what those terms mean. If people won't take the time to understand the simple distinction between the current terms, what makes you think they would take the time to figure out that the NWS has changed the terms it uses?

I mean, the terms are not complicated. People just don't take the two seconds it takes to determine the distinction. It's just like people who say they didn't get the tornado warning: they don't get the warning because they don't utilize adequate methods to receive warnings, not because there wasn't one issued.

Warning - be on high alert

Watch - keep it in the back of your mind

It's not hard to differentiate the two. Just like a Tropical Storm/Tropical Depression.

It actually isn’t that difficult to understand for educated people.

In my honest experience, everyone who has ever gotten the two confused is of lessor intelligence than many. I don’t see why the two are confusing.

man yesterday morning sucked - woke at 4 to pee, heard a siren. looked at my weather app and nothing. turned on the TV, and the fricking tornado is about a mile south of me.

dropped that app with the hurry and replaced it. the warning siren is so quiet in my apartment, i thought it was a fire truck at 1st and had to wait and see what it was.

Watch implies the tornado is out there to be seen IMO

When I worked radio (on air m-f 6pm to 11pm) there were people that would call in and say " I see rotation" and expect us to put it on the air.

Our station was 100kW so the reach was vast.

We just went by what one of the local TV meteorologists would say.

It's not hard to figure out. It's as dumbed down as can be.

I needed this laugh this morning.

You actually have faith that these clowns can read and comprehend what you just wrote.

You know, to the slightly above average intelligent people in America, the watch and warning system has been easy to comprehend since tornado drills in elementary school. But this thread proves that at least half aren't that intelligent and so maybe it should be simplified for the morons out there.
I've never been so amazed at the stupidity of some on this message board

I agree. There should be another level. Too many tornado warnings for something they see on radar. The vast majority never turn into tornadoes. Also I don’t need a tornado warning when the storm is on other side of parish

They're not sending the warning directly to you. It's to anyone that might just happen to be in the path of the storm. If it doesn't pertain to you just ignore the message. That seems pretty simple but I know it's hard.

My wife (no pics) gets this confused all the time, I wonder if it has something to do with her being from Michigan....

I don't see anything wrong with the system.
