Bad answer. We've got people who are bed bound but can have a conversation ... that's discrimination in my book in a situation that human rights have already been violated enough.

While this sucks major crank, I actually agree with slowing the opening of nursing homes. They are quite literally the worst place for Covid to happen in, just look at NY.
With all that being said, this breaks my heart to the residents and their families.

You should’ve been a dick like me and claimed “doctor’s appointment” and voila - you’re at lunch
In a private room too

Agreed. Nursing homes are one of the only places the over-the-top COVID precautions are actually warranted.

frick em. Let them die alone, right? They are old and worthless anyway. Why should anyone care what they want? It isn't like they may prefer risking covid in order to see their loved ones.
And why would loved ones need to talk to them before they die, right? All that matters is COVID. The mental health and well being of people should never be a consideration against COVID.
/sarcasm off
I really don't understand why people are OK with treating the elderly this way. They are humans in need of regular contact just like everyone else. They are old enough to decide what risks are appropriate for themselves. frick all the COVID fear nazis.

Outdoor visitation is a start, and it's been allowed in Alabama through the entire pandemic. But in-house visitation to the bedbound residents would jeopardize those patients and many more and is too risky.

A good portion of them probably don't actually have the mental capacity to make certain decisions. At least that's the way it was with my grandmother.

Oilfield, some homes have had nearly a 100% infection rate .. at this point I'm not sure it matters. I promise you these people need to see their people.

Maybe where you are. My grandmother is 90 and everyone I have ever met in her home were all completely lucid. Very few cases of dementia, alzheimers or other mental degradation conditions.

Yep. Go see how bad Governor Cuomo messed this up in New York before complaining about the restrictions

While I do have a grandmother in a nursing home (she's almost 99 and has zero clues that we haven't seen her bless her heart), if you take them out then they have to quarantine for 14 days.
Good trade off though .. and it's not being a d*ck.

Then this tells me that it's not likely that it's CMS guidelines but rather the LDH guidelines.

I'm a grown adult, and I should be able to decide for myself if I want to enter a public dwelling without a mask. I should have the right to choose for myself if want to attend that October outdoor concert I bought tickets for in January. Instead, the concert has been cancelled and restrictions on everyday activities are still severely limited due to this virus.
I've often questioned the extremity of the restrictions. Then I spoke with my sister who works at director of nursing for +12 nursing homes, and the restrictions drastic because the residents are most vulnerable. She even went on to tell me in one of her homes, they've lost nearly 40% of the population to covid deaths. A home with an average 125 residents is down to 80 in only 5-6 months.

Count yourself lucky then, studies say about 50% of folks in nursing homes have some form of dementia.

Getting a wheelchair or hospital bed outside shouldn't be super hard for nursing homes to figure out.

quote:IDK? But Louisiana has been much more restricted than Alabama through this thing. I mean some of your kids just went back to school in person this week, ours have been in-person since as early as the week of August 5th. Highschool football's been playing here since the 3rd week of August.
Then this tells me that it's not likely that it's CMS guidelines but rather the LDH guidelines.
My co-worker's been visiting his mother (outdoors) daily at her nursing home the entire time. At a great distance, but he can take her things and sit out in the parking lot & talk to her from her while she sits on the porch.
