If anything, this thread should give everyone of us a huge wakeup call. Work hard and save now for your own future, and out plenty of money away for your care when the time comes.

A few things to consider: The nursing home lobby uses millions of dollars each Session to fight off legislative attempts for nursing home reform. For a reason. Reform attempts focuses on getting more medicare money for home health care services. i.e. taking money out of the nursing home association's members. And the same association used to be comprised, 80% , of EWE's cronies. Most which have been passed on to families & friends. Finally, if you need further proof, the nursing home association is, by far, JBE's largest contributor. Would you trust your loved one with this crowd?

It’s also this same lobby that maintains a moratorium on the number of nursing home beds in the state that are Medicare/Medicaid certified. This effectively eliminates a competitive market for nursing homes. No competition=bad for the consumer. If you want to build a Medicaid certified SNF in this state you have to purchase existing certified “beds”.
Just like everything else. The cronyism runs deep.

Why are you attacking me? I originally responded to you saying that the OP should feel bad because his parents took care of him as a baby.
The OP asked for advice on care, and you're calling everyone in here horrible for even considering nursing facilities. It's NOT the same as caring for an infant. Not even in the same ball park. If you had experience in this area you would never make such ridiculous assertions.
I'm genuinely happy for you that you either haven't been in this situation or that your situation worked out well providing home care. I think it's a given that home is best, but not everyone is physically/mentally/financially able to care for another 24/7. No reason to be a jerk about it.

The Lodge - At Lane in Zachary just opened and is the nicest one we've found. Our family looked at every single facility in Baton Rouge, Zachary, and St Francisville. We just moved a couple family members in there over the last month or two. Both seem to like it and the people. Both complain about the food....one says its to spicy and one says its to plain. 
Since its new its very nice for now.

Edit: They are both in Assisted Living side of facility but facility does have a true nursing home side as well...I don't know anything about it other than its in the same New Development.

I have two aunts and an uncle living in Magnolia Brook Assisted Living on Seigen. It’s a good place for them.
My uncle and one aunt have dementia and the other aunt is n a walker and had fallen many times with serious injuries resulting from the falls, but she is probably the most capable of the three.
We have a large extended family and try to visit them often. Two of my sisters visit on two days of the week every week.

In the event of a hurricane, do not expect any nursing home to take care of your loved ones. Go get them and take them with you if you need to evacuate.

I had a family member at The Pearl at Jamestown for several years. It was really nice. No clue about cost/payment arrangements etc but this particular person did not have a lot of money.

My dad passed in Jan and mother entered Hospice in December. I moved her from the facility in March and she's now with hospice care 5 days a week. In the home they built. Took her out of facility care.
Here's what I know. No matter the reputation of care, always watch it closely. Very closely. Shortcuts in care at a facility are jarring. Especially if there is limited oversight by you or family. Don't get lazy and allow them to be the only oversight. You'll need someone to go daily so the staff is always on alert. Scatter visit times.

I put my mom in Garden View and she loved it. It did cost us $6,000/month plus nursing, 3 meals, and housekeeping.

This particular family member didn't have that kind of coin. I think the nursing home took his share of their parent's home as payment or something like that IIRC. That couldn't have been more than 40k or so though.

Yes they will work with you to get their money. I had already sold her house at that point.
When I was visiting, they had a retired NFL player in there but I never heard of him.

Nursing homes are built for scale nowadays but are actually descendants of in-home models where a single nurse/caretaker would care for wounded/disable soldiers, people with ailing health, etc. These types of settings were around long before they were licensed facilities.

And families were generally much larger; more kids to share the burden.
And wives/mothers worked in the home.
Maybe the fast paced culture with career minded women, rampant single parenthood, having no kids or 1-2 kids, living in various states, etc. has some significant downsides later in life.

Costs are alarming honestly. We don't pay due to Medicare and a Hospice designation. They pay $5705 per month. Ancillary care is through a supplemental policy she started about 10 years ago.
Another tip, guys. Add catastrophic to your parents or yourself/spouse. Heart attack, stroke etc. It's easy to add, no medicals and cheap. Some less than a case of coke per month.
