Why was "Joe Versus the Volcano" such a shitty movie? How can a movie with both Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan be that bad?

If I were a super villain, not saying that I am, but if I were how would I make a volcano in the middle of Times Square and demand one million dollars?

Actually, this happens a lot. Volcanoes are known to grow in peoples backyards in the matter of weeks. LINK

But, to have one there? You'd have to drill a deep hole and put lots of nukes to develop a mantle plume in the mantle that will eventually work it's way to the surface over thousands and thousands of years i.e. Hawaii!

Is bad if the Volcano erupts before its supposed to?

Are scientists more concerned about the size of the Volcano or how it blasts?

Is it a problem is a volcano remains dormant for a long time? Will scientists stop paying attention to it?

Do scientists prefer tall skinny volcanoes or the small thick volcanoes?

What if a volcano goes a long time without blasting while a scientist is studying it? Will the scientist get bored? If it takes to long to erupt, is that why she wont go out with me again?

1) Only if we aren't prepared. The sooner and more frequently it erupts the better. Relieves pressure. Regular releases is nature's mylanta.

2) Size doesn't matter. One of the largest volcanoes has been erupting for 30 years and isn't dangerous. That's Hawaii (Kula). Blasts are the bad ones.

3) If a formerly active one remains dormant, it's bad. See Q1. Volcanologists pay attention to all volcanoes.

4) They like the ones that make the most mess.

5) Pretty sure scientists gravitate towards the exciting ones.

NO MORE Qs for YOU!

Yes! New islands are being made as we speak. In fact, in a thousand years, there will probably be another island on the Hawaiian islands. It'll probably lose and island too. LINK

I actually think this movie is perfect. You either love it or hate it, but it does exactly what it set out to do.

I don't know. Probably not in our lifetimes, but definitely soon geologically speaking.

It's crazy huge though.

Caldera's formed from different eruptions:

How do volcanoes sometimes have local magnetic change effects when the Earth's magnetism does not change?

Yes! Well, depends on how long you live.

Mt Rainier is formed from the partial melting of the Juan de Fuca plate subducting underneath the North American plate. The melting plate travels up and forms volcanoes at the surface. That whole mountain chain (Hood, St. Helens, Rainier, etc) are volcanoes made from the melting of the diving plate!
