I just sent a dozen or so following up on things I have thought of since I left the office today.

Ive encountered this phenom recently as well. Some people have their phones set to make noise when they receive an email which is mind blowing to me. Otherwise I would send an email out when I think of something for the team to look into or a possible solution to a problem. These are usually salesy type people who I have the issue with.

I think it is perfectly acceptable as long as you make it clear that it isn't necessary to answer right away. My work email is through an app on my personal phone, so there is really no avoiding the email themselves, and I check it every so often in the evening just in case something pressing may come up. However, if the email is ambiguous as to when it needs an answer it can be a slightly frustrating. Any email from a superior in the evening also puts me in a weird spot sometimes, so being clear as to when it needs to be addressed is greatly appreciated.

I understand this completely and always mention that its to be dealt with the next day or something along those lines. I go out of my way not to let important people get my guys to handle things outside of normal hours unless its truly a critical issue with a client's production system (usually not since we design everything to be redundant.) My go to response to employees that respond on the spot is "go to bed".

My philosophy is that you can send it whenever you want, but don't expect a response before or after business hours unless:

1)You're a really important client and I agree it's urgent

Or

2)You're my boss and you agree it's urgent.

Send him porn as an apology. That should stiffen his rustled jimmies.

I'll play devils advocate, it depends on the business. If youre getting 200+ emails a day, it's common courtesy to send it during a time when they can promptly respond, otherwise it won't be done.

Also, where I work, if you aren't emailing throughout the day, you'd be fired pretty quickly because there's too many moving parts and if you don't answer an email immediately, the operation can come to a halt.
