You've nailed it. There was a time that you'd just avoid certain corners. Now, it seems like you're prey

Just flipped a house in Algiers Point and only got $200 a square foot to an all cash buyer, terrible.

NOLA is so similar to Mexico IMO in respect to the tourist dollar. Mexico is hurting but still makes money. BUT, it's only gonna take one gringo getting killed while doing gringo shite in gringo areas. The cartels seem to know this. That's why a Riu or Ritz hasn't been shot up yet. The violence toward tourists in Mexico has been the "what did you expect" variety. People in seedy areas at 4am and border towns. Or Mexican Americans who venture off a little too far and I think get mistaken for locals or targeted for ransom. But let one dad-bod guy get gunned down walking out of Squid Row in cargo shorts and that pic goes viral? Cabo will be as appealing as Beruit.

Same for the FQ. But it is getting sketchier. Criminals in the FQ don't seem to have the sense to limit their activity. And let one soccer mom get shot down in a regular part of the FQ? Game over. A pic of a blood stained hand holding a hand grenade or Mardi Gras beads poking out from a crime scene sheet? Millions will be lost.

As mentioned. Before everybody knew parts of the FQ weren't for everybody. And after 2am you better just go to the room or bar to bar. But stay indoors. This is changing. The crime is creeping into normal tourist activities. There hasn't been a major tipping point yet, but when it comes? The city will have to look hard at policies and crowd control. Or die on the vine.

Yep. For a city dependant on the tourist dollar you'd think they would at least put a facade up of giving a shite about crime.

Beale Street in Memphis is pretty clean and controlled for the most part. The cops ID everyone at street corners where its blocked off. Keeps the strays out..... Bourbon could be a larger version of that.. with lots of money thrown at it and side traffic cut off.

For the locals. I am sure the numbers have been crunched? Is there a difference? Has this shite made any impact yet? Local news talk about it? Anybody IN the service industry have it personally affect their bottom line?

I sit here in Katy spouting as I sip coffee. I miss NOLA and all my cheesy touristy shite that half on this board would scoff at. Give me the FQ and Razoo's and Cats Meow. Then the hangover and the history an nostalgia the next day as I drink my hangover away at Lafittes or The Carousel Bar.

This is very accurate. My buddy had a house in Acapulco in the 90's. Super popular with American tourists. They had a bar and restaurant row not unlike Bourbon Street that the cartels stayed out of entirely. The Police and Mayor decided to crack down on the cartels and they retaliated by killing the Chief of Police and decapitating him. A guy walked into Senor Frogs with a duffel bag and pulled out the Chiefs head and put it on the bar. This would be the equivalent of doing this at Pat O's. The tourist industry died out completely within three months and the city is a shell of itself now.

I agree. New Orleans is a terrible place to visit. I feel sorry for the people that come to visit Bourbon St.

Bourbon Street needs to be closed to vehicle traffic. Have barricades and police at every entry point. You can't get in without being frisked first.

Until they do this, you won't catch me out there.

I know Beale Street is much smaller, but when they implemented this tactic, violent crime decreases dramatically.

Lots of petty crime, pickpockets and such, but never gunfire. Meanwhile, NOLA was the murder capital of the US so it isn't as if there wasn't violence. The difference between then and today was how the NOPD was allowed to police.

Well...that....and the fact that the drinking age was 18. So the loitering masses were somewhere else...somewhere less touristy (and therefor less expensive) pulling the same shenanigans. "Loitering American" casualties were exponential... No surprise with the increased frequency and severity of incidents with fewer tourists and police to act as a buffer.
