Guess we won't be naming an Obama Elementary anytime soon...

Renaming those schools sure helped the students of Orleans Parish

I have no problem with people renaming the schools. Maybe if it is named after someone they can relate to and respect they will respect the building and the institution of learning. Maybe they won't, but I think it is reasonable to try.

Anyone notice anything strange with the people who replaced the previously named buildings?
That renaming the schools has boosted New Orleans to the top of every public school ranking in America. Thank God!

NOLA has been just as bad, or worse, for a very long time.

I remember reading a story years ago when they tried to rename all the McDonogh schools. Apparently, McDonogh made gifts of money and property. However, if they ever renamed any of the schools (or other property), all the property (and money) would revert back to McDonogh's heirs. So, Mitch the Little B!tch is stuck with the McDonogh name.

Apollo 7 didn't land on the Moon.
This must've been a Sheila Jackson Lee field trip.

Shut the frick up Bama trash! I'm sure you and your redneck arse family run to N'awlins all the time for good food. As for the the people out there in those shite lil parishes that were never worried about what's going on in New Orleans before and casting stones at it, now all of sudden you are. Really??

I notice these schools are shitholes and education hasn't improved, so changing the names did nothing of merit.

Wow. Seeing those pictures and realizing we aren't putting every extra dollar into schools is frustrating. The NOLA public schools are pathetic, unless you get to go to the 3 or so new ones.
Also: even though I'm glad it wasn't a slideshow, the format sucks on that list.

John McDonogh died around 1850. He willed about $750,000 in money and real estate to New Orleans and Baltimore (where he lived until he was about 20) to build public schools for poor children, white and black.
At one time, there was something in the neighborhood of 40 or 45 McDonogh funded schools in New Orleans that bore his name. Now there are just a few. Many have been re-named after other people, primarily civil rights activists.
I'm not familiar with any stipulation in his will regarding repaying his heirs if school names were changed. If that's true, N.O. obviously doesn't give a shite, because they've been re-naming McDonogh schools for 40 years or so.
