Then who the hell is paying for all of these house/condos/apartments?
rich folk who want a home in the city
rich northern kids who can work shite jobs but have family money to stay
young business owners
what businesses do you know of that have moved into the city in the last year or so? the last thing i heard was GE in 2012

and why is that going to stop in 5-10 years time?

I agree. I want to know who the hell is paying $2-3k/mo in rent and buying the houses in Uptown/Lakeview.
I can't even imagine it because by all accounts make decent money, and I feel fricking poor.

Yep. Seriously doubt they actually live there. Just a weekend getaway.

you can't sit here with a straight face or any facts on your side and tell us that NOLA has a good job market for professionals

of course not, thatd be naive - its a boutique city that attracts wealthy, hipster wanna-be's
despite all the shitty qualities of the place, its still a highly desirable place to live - that speaks volumes to me

So it's not dishwashers and poor folks who are doing this?
Just need to be clear on this. So many people want to paint nola into the corner with their typical stereo types, but it doesn't always workout that way.
I agree that it makes no sense, but the investments into the city are real. There is so much development going on in former shitty hoods that it will blow your mind. I like to ride my bike around places and you can go up and down several old crap streets and see two or three new places going up every block and major renovations every where in between.

I bought uptown. What do you want to know?
Posted on 2/16/16 at 11:17 pm to notiger1997
no one is denying real estate is expensive
what we're saying is there isn't a base of white collar jobs to support the rise
NOLA's prospects for college grads or really anyone with degrees is pitiful for a city of its size.

GNO is touting wage growth since 2005? Talk about misleading stats. NOLA lost 70-100,000 mostly poor folk after Katrina.
Posted on 2/16/16 at 11:22 pm to TROCKS50
Too many gutter punks saturated the market?

The Cities With The Fastest And Slowest Median Wage Growth

At the top of the list is the New Orleans, Louisiana, metro area, with a median wage that’s grown 6.5% since 2005, bolstered in large part by new home construction and tourism.
Those aren't white collar jobs. I graduated in electrical engineering last May, applied to every job opening I could find, and didn't get a position until 7 months later. There just weren't many openings.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
What are you upset about with this subject? N.O. is not a great place with great jobs so I'm not sure what point you are trying to prove. It is what it is, but people are loving the place.

you are cherry picking a statistic to fit your false narrative.
Posted on 2/16/16 at 11:27 pm to notiger1997
Not upset at all
I just don't see how horrible schools, lots of crime, and a lack of real job opportunities meshes long term with what's going on with the real estate market.

Don't use that lame arse response about tourism
Tourism and the AirBnB side definitely props it up. The second home market pushes it up some more. Also, we have more transplants post-K from the east and west coasts where real estate is expensive and bidding wars were common at times. That mentality has migrated with them.
I was trying to buy a few more properties last year and was outbid several times. The last two times I bid over asking price and was "not even close" according to the selling agent. Rents don't support prices right now so I bowed out. I am considering selling a couple rentals with prices so stupid. The bubble may not completely burst, but I see at least a correction coming.
As far as our job market, it seems pretty balanced except for the O&G sector.

Signed, Las Vegas.
A little different.
Being a tourist in Vegas typically means that you're there to spend a shitload of money at the casino/shows/clubs. I feel like Vegas ain't anything special if you want to have a "cheap" vacation. When the economy went to shite, Vegas got hit hard. People were a lot less willing to vacation to a place for the sole purpose of the trip was to gamble.
There's plenty to do in NOLA as a tourist that is cheap/free. A fun weekend in NOLA is probably a quarter of the cost of a fun weekend in Vegas.
