An overwhelming amount of the jobs there are tourism based. Put simply, NOLA's economy isn't diversified enough. Too one-dimensional IMO and the low oil prices sure don't help.

It's still not bad compared to most cities in the U.S.

And somehow people are finding ways to fill damn near every condo and apartment building in the city.
I'm guessing that's going to slow down though now.

Could you provide an example of a city with similar population? I know some of the rust belt cities are struggling, but there are several places NOLA's size or smaller that are bustling at a steadier and more comfortable pace.

New Orleans doesn't have shite for white collar jobs. Yeah, it's cool the city has gained a few start ups but those are irrelevant compared to Fortune 500-1000 companies that employ hundreds to thousands of professionals at high salaries. These are the companies that sustain cities professional class and keep them stable in down times. NOLA has about as many publicly traded companies as the Lafayette area. Not good if you want to compete against the other major southern cities.

The real estate bubble in the city is going to burst hard in the next 5-10 years.

Then come try and buy or rent real estate. Or rent a weekend room from now through July.

has nothing to do with a competitive job market

washing dishes at the Hyatt or changing sheets at the Sheraton doesn't do much for college educated folk looking to move to the city.

if anything the city will just hit a plateau

massive tourist destinations are unlike other economic backbones

people actually want to live in Nola, and that is very important.

Then who the hell is paying for all of these house/condos/apartments?
Don't use that lame arse response about tourism. Someone has been buying up all of this shite for the last 5 years and they are doing it for a reason?

I do agree though that we've probably topped out and there will be some pullbacks soon.
Just don't be a dumb arse OT poster who has to make their usual post with no idea of what is really going on just because they've been to Nola and walked down Bourbon street.

people always overlook the mobility of our current economy

one can live in a "cool" city (like New Orleans) while their work is based out of Philadelphia or Orlando, etc
