I am saying that when a group of people elect leaders in a state, the leaders have a responsibility to the electorate to carry out their will. Slavery is repugnant, but at the same time if a majority people are in favor of slavery, and if it wasn't unconstitutional at the time, they had the legal right to do do.
Like I said, the war wasn't fought over slavery, but the ability of the states to make policy as they see fit. States should be able to govern themselves without fear of an over reaching federal government. There's a good portion of Americans today that see the federal government over reaching again, this time on different topics- which is exactly my point.
