The city's new regulations will already cover some of this

what would differentiate this "home grown" app from Uber?

Would be an easier sale.

This is the problem IMO. The inventory of cab drivers and cabs in this city are against uber. These guys were fighting the City's new regulations to have newer vehicles, cameras, GPS, etc. two years ago before uber talks.

Of course they're against it. That doesn't make it right, it makes them content with providing shitty service.

Now they are just going to jump on board with and outside middle man that will still require all the same equipment ? I think you could see these crazy cabbies strike and riot right in the middle of a high traffic time of year.

At which point Uber would have been handed 100% marketshare? That would be like them getting up from the table and leaving their chips. The fastest way to improve cab service in Nola is to force them to compete with Uber, not regulation. There will still be demand for cabs in certain areas of the city, for people who simply prefer to lift their arm at the nearest one rather than browse the app.

Yes, but all the cab drivers are on strike in protest of uber.

However, I think that most of the pro-Uber arguments in this thread (I've read about half of it) are very poor.

Thing is, there shouldn't need to be any "pro-Uber" arguments. It's a free country, so the assumption is Uber can do what it wants. If the anti-Uber folks want to keep them out, it's their job to show a damn good reason why. They don't have one; at least, they don't have one that isn't 100% self-serving economic protectionism.

They don't have drivers or vehicles just the middle man. The drivers with the cabs are on canal street striking in protest.

Not if they are the ones at the city council throwing a fit to keep uber out the market.

Yeah you lost me. Bottom line is if the cab drivers wanted to strike i'd say be my guest if i was a nola resident.

Striking because you actually have to face competition (superior competition at that). Yeah you do that and see how it works out for you.

The cabbies brought this upon themselves.

They fought the new regs tooth and nail. They've bitched, pissed, and moaned so much that I doubt they have any real support.

Uber will open the door a crack and then they'll be all in.
