Have there been accusations of corruption directly related to Uber from other cities?

There was a lot of talk about their Surge pricing a little while back.

And just because corruption hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't or can't happen.

The council always defers on big items. It's rare anything happens the first go-round.

I can't wait to see the girls flock the limo you are in when you get dropped off at Vic's.

By the way, I have the Uber app on my phone and I think NOLA should allow Uber into town.

However, I think that most of the pro-Uber arguments in this thread (I've read about half of it) are very poor.

The whole point of Uber is that everything is transparent and accountable. This terrifies the cab industry.

That's another point I neglected (I'm looking at the issue purely in terms of Uber lowering costs across the board). Quite a few times during busy weekends, cabbies have shut off their meters and given me high flat rates. I don't have a problem with that in theory (they gave me a price and I accepted it), but Uber should be much more efficient with this and give people real-time adjustments.

Which ones in particular?

Mom would drop off. Uber would pick up me and the ladies in the limo after I did my damage at Vic's.

What would Uber have to gain by destroying consumer trust?

So is corruption an Uber problem or a government problem?

They wanted to charge $30 to bring me down Poydras for a Hornets game. There was absolutely no one at the arena, and it wouldn't even register as something big in any city in the country.

$30 event fee though

Uber gives you a $30 credit just for signing up

I'm with you and no way I'm paying $25 or $30 to get from my place in the CBD to the Bywater. I've taken cabs that charged less that 15 for that trip.

No, uber drivers do not own taxis, they use their own vehicles. There's nothing to stop current taxi drivers from working for uber if they own a car, but they must pass a background check, be ok with being rated by their passengers, and presumably keep their car clean. They are very threatened by this.

This is the problem IMO. The inventory of cab drivers and cabs in this city are against uber. These guys were fighting the City's new regulations to have newer vehicles, cameras, GPS, etc. two years ago before uber talks. Now they are just going to jump on board with and outside middle man that will still require all the same equipment ? I think you could see these crazy cabbies strike and riot right in the middle of a high traffic time of year.

I would love to see a uber type deal in the city. Not because I have a problem with the current system, but b/c I want visitors here to have a better experience.

Now is a great time for a local to develop an app that works with the local cabbies.

and what would differentiate this "home grown" app from Uber? Not requiring Cabbies to maintain their vehicles and be prompt, professional and courteous?

Uber is a GREAT service. But $25/minimum is ridiculous.
