Damn my dad lived in Hawaii in 70s and had tons of Hawaiian buddies but he did say some surfing area etc were just for locals. He was on one once and they told him that he could finish surfing that day but that area was sacred to them etc and wasn’t really for outsiders. He apologized and said he didn’t know that and was wondering why no one was there but of course he would respect their wishes and everyone was cool. He shared a few beers with them and left. I think he knew one of the guys. People obviously got along better then

Native (Hawaiian) violence against “mainlanders” is deep and widespread. But very downplayed by the PTB and media.

Probably not, just media catches all and tells all now.

I lived there for 3 years. There are a lot of amazing people and I have some great friends there.
That being said, there are a lot of assholes there who don’t like mainlanders. The closest thing I’ve ever felt to being black is being white in Hawaii. Certainly not even close to the same but I understand what it is like when you walk into a room and you’re the one person of a different color and people treat you slightly different because of it.
If you understand what is happening and respect it and their culture, they open up their homes and are some great people.
I also completely see this happening in Maui.

Ehhh. You ever been back in the sticks and go to the local bar? Same shite happens. I did that once when I was in my early 20’s, and I haven’t done it since. As soon as I walked in I told myself I have Fricked up this time. Everyone was white, but the 20 “locals” had never seen me before. I got out fine, but a few weeks later I heard of a guy that got his head beat in with one of those short little bats that the bartender would keep behind the bar.
Needless to say, I never went back.
Edit: there wasn’t any fighting or drama. I showed respect to the older locals and didn’t talk/try to get any females that were there. I figured I would get my shite beat and thrown in a holler to never be seen again.

Imagine living in a tropical paradise like Hawaii and you wouldn't want any foreigners coming over and ruining things, now would you?
I'm sure if you knew what you know now, you would have picked your own damn cotton. Same thing.

This is a sad mentality of living life.

Hawaii is a U.S. state, he's not a foreigner and has the same right to be there as them.

Two native Hawaiian men savagely attacked a white man with a shovel in 2014 because they didn't want someone with his skin color moving into their Maui village. The brutal beatings left the victim with cracked ribs, a concussion, and head trauma.
Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi and Levi Aki Jr., both in their early thirties, were each convicted of federal hate crimes in November and face sentencing Thursday. Local lawyers reckon this is the first time the U.S. has prosecuted native Hawaiians for hate crimes, reported the Associated Press.
The Department of Justice indicated in November that both men could be sentenced for up to ten years in jail. Prosecutors have sought nine years for Alo-Kaonohi and six-and-a-half years for Aki.

not justifying anything whatsoever, but i never understood why people want to be a part of social clubs or live in a place where NO ONE wants them there

I'll take the Caribbean over Hawaii any day.
Cheaper and closer to the real world.

Most people are very naive to the xenophobia that exist in most countries around the world

Hawaii is a shite hole with a paradise wrapper on it. The Hawaiians don’t want anyone else there. I say we pack up as much as possible and leave them with their coconuts. Good luck

When reporting on the duo's sentencing this week, the Associated Press intimated that the hate crime was, in part, a fight against cultural erasure and that the victim was ignorant, claiming the case "highlights the struggles between Native Hawaiians who are adamant about not having their culture erased and people who move to Hawaii without knowing or considering its history and racial dynamics."
I hate the media
