Naughty kids may soon catch a break in one suburb of Detroit.

Madison Heights has declared what amounts to no-spanking zones in key public spaces, including the city hall, public library, police station and recreation center.

quote:

The resolution carries no penalties or enforcement power, so no mom or dad will get a ticket for slapping a toddler's rump. But the hope is that this blunt signage will get people talking and thinking twice about how they discipline little Sam or Susie, said Soltis, who proposed the idea.

quote:

"Obviously, not every kid who gets spanked turns into a juvenile delinquent, but the research shows that more of the children who turn out badly were punished that way," Soltis said, concluding: "It's time to raise children differently."

Does it account for the fact that lower income people are more likely to spank their children? I’d bet the kids being lower income is the main factor, not being spanked

Yes, not spanking has worked out so well for these past couple generations. Last I heard they were disrupting Congressional Judiciary Committee hearings for Supreme Court nominees with epic skyscreams and temper tantrums.

My wife and I are bringing back discipline, one arse whooping at a time. #resist

Plus maybe bad kids are more likely to become delinquents, whether spanked or not. And bad kids are more likely to be spanked than good kids.

I can’t even remember the last time I saw a kid spanked in public.

I’ve seen plenty of instances of yelling and cussing at a kid, maybe even hitting, but not what I would call spanking.

You cannot expect people who set public policy to understand the difference between correlation and causation.

My parents would end up getting arrested.

Me and my brother always got "spankings" (my mom would slap us across the face.. And til this day I hate for people to just randomly touch my face). If my mom slapped me... And then called my daddy at work to tell him what I did... It was going to be a rough day.. But they never spanked my sister. Anyone other guys on here use to get whippings and had a sister who didnt?

This point has been made for decades, but it’s one of the dumbest chicken/egg arguments ever. Bad adults were usually bad kids. Bad kids get spanked more than good kids do. The research really suggests that spanking has little to no long-term effect on kids, and that’s the most convincing anti-spanking argument.

I agree here. I think spanking lets the kid know what they did is bad better than a "timeout."

My dad would beat our arse...belt, knuckle sammich, punch, slap, spoon thrown from across the table...whateves was handy.

Send us to our room....his version of a "timeout".

Come in a little later after we've both calmed down, and gave us a "why I hit you" explanation that made you feel like absolute garbage for disappointing him.

Then he would ground us.

Perfect trificata. Ha.

I did ask him once when I was like in Jr High, why he hit us. He simply said something like, "Son, I love you, and I know when to stop. One day you'll cross someone, and he won't care about when he should stop."
