Yeah, with your salary that's absolutely not ok. Hell, it's not even prom, it's homecoming. Just be prepared for how much she'll be planning to drop on prom now if you can't get her in line by then
And I honestly hope your lady works.

Ok, you absolutely CANNOT afford this then. Take it back. Good suggestions for alternatives on here.
Tell your wife I'm a military spouse too, and she should be ashamed and should know better. Our household income is higher, but no way in hell would I spend more than $100 on a one use dress.

Does that not seem like a frick load? Or am I just old?
I spend money pretty profligately and that seems pretty excessive. The most I've ever spent on a suit was $1100 and that was due to time constraints (Brooks Bros was the only decent store that could have it ready for a funeral I had to attend in 24 hours) and I still felt like an arse. Keep in mind I'll be able to wear that suit for 20 years.
You may think you're being good to your daughter, but all you're doing is (1) screwing up her expectations and (2) wasting money.
Put that money aside for when she goes off to school.

Do they plan on selling it when done? I've heard of ppl doing that and getting SOME of their $ back. OP I have a young daughter that will one day be needing shite like this. If the situation ever happens when it's "daddy I have to have it", I'll prob break down and hand her my card. You sound like a sucker!l but agh, it takes one to know one

Where did she by a $700 dress at 10:38 pm?
Story sounds like BS.

It is a power play by your wife. Your daughter is in high school and too dumb to know this is not acceptable.
Your wife will use the excuse of your level of love for your daughter for justification. It will eventually come down to "You cannot tell ME how I can and can't spend OUR money."
It is a test and so far, you are a sucker.

Want to feel worse? Go to dillards and see all of the perfectly fine dresses there for far less than $700. I bet at least one even looks like the dress your wife bought and I bet if you bring your daughter she will pick at least 3 that she likes just fine.

To the OP: You need to get this under control ASAP. It will only get worse if you do not and lead to secrets and lies.

Your wife is out of control. You need to PIIHB immediately.

I'm a mom ... That's insane. My daughters was $100 and that was the most I was paying. Is your daughter a senior and on court or something?? It's early to be announcing I would think but no way on earth I'd spend hat kind of money. And we can definitely afford it.
Posted on 8/16/15 at 8:50 am to cubsfan5150
That's outrageous. Where did she go?
Posted on 8/16/15 at 8:51 am to tiger91
That's expensive but not super crazy. I think the wife spent $500 for a dress for the daughters one year old pictures.
Who really cares how much it is if she really likes it

There are really nice dresses out there for $300-350. Who is your wife trying to impress.
The dress should be returned.

I buy my nice dresses at nordstrom. The most I think I've paid is $350
Posted on 8/16/15 at 9:27 am to cubsfan5150
She might have spent $50 because she won't be wearing it long.
Joke only applies to daughter if she's 18.

The real shittyness of this situation is the wife put OP in an impossible situation. If he makes a stink about the dress, the daughter will develop daddy issues and rebel by blowing the basketball team. Man... So glad I only have sons.

So damn glad I have all boys. Dodged multiple expensive bullets there.

Knowing my luck whenever I have kids I'll probably get stuck with all girls.

Rent a dress. That works for lots if people for a one time scenario!

You can't re-wear them b/c pics. We have a closet full of homecoming, prom, sorority,,etc dresses.
Most girls are pretty knowledgeable and won't spend over $200, at most.
