Meh
Compared to anywhere in La, it's still a pretty nice area for a driving vacation.
A lot will depend on what kind of condo complex you are staying at as well.

Grew up in the 90s and early 2000s going to Sand Destin with my family for the ABC convention, and man I’ve got some great memories from the Hilton over the years. It’s been probably 5yrs since I’ve been back and I remember being shocked at how big it is and the amount of traffic

In the last 5-10 years I've seen a ton of trash wandering around 30A.

I long for the original Seaside days where it felt secluded and empty. Hardly any development anywhere.

We go to Turks and Caicos for cheaper than 30A now and it's light years prettier and where we stay is empty.

Sanibel Island.

Doubtful. SEC beach crowd requires reasonable driving distance. That's a ways outside that for most.

One word: Louisianans

My family used to own a townhouse right on the beach at SouthBay. My parents used to say at the homeowners meetings that the main advice other homeowners gave to new homeowners was not to rent to people from Louisiana.

No one listened and some of these townhomes would empty out like clown cars on their way to the beach to sit under their Rajin Cajun themed tents.

CSB maybe but it's insular and at least a couple decades from any resemblance to 30A. It lacks the sex appeal that drives this stuff, but so did 30A in the early 90s.

I think in general well to do families from high growth Southern states are looking beyond the traditional beach vacation more and more. Dallas people, for example, will go wherever is thought to be en vogue which is how they end up in Maine and Sea Island and other places that aren't really geographically sensible destinations (it's also why they started marching like ants to 30A in their identical suburbans in the first place).

I'm not sure if there can really be another 30A at this point if we mean a place that's within 6, 8, 12 hours driving of major southern cities where a big cross section of middle-upper class people can own in a splendid location with reasonably high end offerings (rather than just sporadically vacation).

We're definitely seeing a resurgence back to some of the more traditionally-styled resorts - Greenbriar, Broadmoor, Sea Island, etc. IMO

Its pretty much second nature to them. Then they bitch when all of a sudden they are not allowed to smoke somewhere.

The sand at Destin is pretty much one giant ashtray these days.

I grew up in Gulf Breeze and I can never remember there being such hordes of tourists from Texas and Louisiana back in the 80s and 90s.

Destin is the inexpensive and not subject to a ton of rules. Why would an elite stay on crowded beach?

They all left after Labor Day. We were there for a week and noticed the same thing. However, most of "them" were gone after Monday.

Seriously? The Florida Panhandle from Pensacola to Destin has always been chock full of folks from Texas and Louisiana.

True. Property owners should stick to renting to folks from Alabama. Fewer guests for family trips because brothers and sisters are also significant others.

We got there (Ft Walton/Destin) Sunday afternoon. Walked on the beach and was like....what the hell have we gotten ourselves into! It was packed and some dumb redneck blasting annoying country music for the entire beach to hear. Then after Monday it was all good. The people we met were from Oklahoma and northern La. Food was good. Went to Back Porch and ate at La Lagniappe.

My takeaway from my last time there (1 year ago – my BIL was there and forced us to go):

* The lack of Fat Shaming in our country has had a devastating effect on our country and me. In the old days, looking at the women in Destin increased my libido. Now, it decreases my libido and appetite.

* In my day, women used to start getting into “beach shape” starting Jan/Feb of each year. Roll forward to today….they eat Cheeto’s and Twinkies all day.

* Most of the sub-30 year old women look like they are 5 months pregnant. What is up with a gut on young women?

* Tramp Stamps are not appealing, especially on 40+ year old women. There is no reason to show off your “ink” when your body is not attractive. Put a one piece on and cover that crap up.

One good thing….at lest the gym at the resort I was staying at was empty.
