It’s a vicious cycle. Refs don’t want to do it because of a-hole players, coaches, and parents that complain about everything. So we get inexperienced and bad officiating and the criticism gets worse, so people are less likely to become officials.

I’ve umpired travel softball for years. Games during COVID went so much smoother with parents forced to watch from the outfield fences and not chirping about every borderline pitch. The calmer the fans are, I’ve learned the calmer the coaches tends to be. I lobbied our associations to keep the parents out there.

Maybe. But he didn’t move the ball forward. He rolled it to the left laterally. The whole moving everything around is definitely poor officiating and has a horrible look but he didn’t move the ball forward. He rolled it to the left.

The lack of qualified refs is exasperating the problem

I’ve never ref’ed a game in my life but know not to move the chains and the ball from the spot to create a first down. If he moved it before bringing in the chains based on another official’s spot that’s one thing….but this isn’t that…

That maybe true as well but the ball is clearly rolled to the left Not forward. Zoom in if you have to. I can’t help you if you only see what you want to see.

I really don’t care about any of this so I’m done after this last post but if you can’t see the ball being rolled left and not moved forward then you’re not paying attention. It should have never been moved at all; that’s bushleague officiating and shows the inexperience of the officials. I have no clue about the chain though but the ball moved laterally.

They are doing the Bama game next week. These are SEC officials in training. They are out of Birmingham.

Looks like the official may have given some juice on the chain itself too. Is that thing made of bungee material or did the one off screen step forward?

A couple weeks ago I had a ref actually tell me that a horse collar wasn’t a horse collar because the runner fell forward

Yeah, that is correct.

The player has to be pulled either backwards or to the side.
