It’s a vicious cycle. Refs don’t want to do it because of a-hole players, coaches, and parents that complain about everything. So we get inexperienced and bad officiating and the criticism gets worse, so people are less likely to become officials.

This could be argued that this a huge societal problem and an issue with many professions. Cops being one of the most important that comes to mind.

I’ve reffed at the high school level and I’m on their side the vast majority of the time but imagine the idiots are right and the ref is wrong.. they make mistakes. That’s fine and understandable but coaches should always have the ability to discuss calls and should expect the refs to know the rules or confer for clarification.. I’ve coached a long time and have only been flagged once and it was my fault for getting in his way but it’s become difficult even discussing things with the newer refs.. the best young refs I’ve experienced the last few years have been female. Possibly because coaches and parents aren’t as vocal towards them ..but they also work harder to know the rules to prove themselves.

In the end.. the refs are rightfully jaded because of I’ll tempered parents and some coaches who don’t know how to shut up. But they are far from infallible

In other states it takes 3-4 years to break into your first varsity game

I remember asking him this. He said he wasn't sure, but his dad told him that when he started, he did JV games for 6 years until he started doing varsity. This was a long time ago, his dad is in his 70s so I assume there were a lot more people wanting to be refs then.

In some of the post, I see people saying they have to deal with the parents. Ive been to my fair share of HS football games and I don't ever recall see a parent get on a ref. I mean, the parents are usually in the stands. If a ref makes a bad call of course you have the fans yelling at them, but they are on the field doing a job, they probably don't really hear it.

They have to deal with the coaches, but that's just part of the game.

As for as parent interaction, I think umps have it the worst. I haven't been to a HS baseball game since.. maybe 2 or 3 years after graduating, but I went when I was in HS and I remember several times seeing a parent or someone.. who was sitting right behind home plate or close to it, be told to leave the game.

But mistakes is one thing, when they do something like what was in the video, they should never be allowed to call another game again.

I’m a 20 year high school basketball ref. We have a shortage as well. They’ll schedule games six nights a week to compensate for the shortage. The problem with that is the veteran refs get way over worked and burnout sets in.

I remember a game at St Joseph when St Joseph forgot to hire the refs. LaSalle team had to wait till 10:00 pm till the refs at Tallulah 15 miles away finished their game. Players lost interest and we choked badly.

This is correct plus there is an Alexandria association. They are so bad we use the Lafayette association for Bunkie home games. If you play an Alexandria team the bias is obvious Monroe Association is much worse.

The lack of qualified refs is exasperating the problem as coaches and fans get frustrated with a lack of quality refs and smaller crews.

It's always the people that think they know the most are never refs.

I quit being a youth sports when I was like 17. It's not worth it to be harassed or belittled by people that think their junior varsity sub is going to make it to the big leagues. Your kid sucks, get over it

Do all basketball refs get assigned to boys and girls basketball or is there refs form the girls only and refs for the boys only?

Then there are more HS basketball team than football teams. Man, whoever does the schedule for yall must have a job on their hands.

Does anyone have the backstory on this gif? Seen it for years, quite obviously ref was cheating for Bama, (but refs don’t cheat for Bama am I right?)
So did he get fired? Etc. what game was that.

If you watch the play, it was a generous spot to begin with. Even at the angle, the black ref moved his foot up the sideline from his initial spot and placed the ball almost a yard up. The whole thing stinks.

There’s a general refs association that assigns refs regardless of gender when I reffed at the high school level but was controlled at a local/regional level across the state.. Then you have different leagues( not lhsaa associated) that have there own ref coordinator that assigns and oversees the refs/umpires.

Reffing in many ways mirrors society in regards to youth sports and the job market in general.. finding quality takes the right amount of money and many of the customers suck

Seems like an odd angle. He looks like he adjust the chain laterally towards the ball. I don’t think he moved the ball forward either. He looks like he rolled the ball laterally to the left to be in line with the marker and get a better idea if it was touching the stick.
