You can get a damn fine Honda Pilot for $35K if you have to have new.
Hell, probably a nice used Volvo XC90 for well under that.
Just saying from perspective, I go to lunch with salesmen all the time and they are either in nice trucks or SUVs.
As for reliability, can't beat an Accord or Camry.

Looked at a diesel. They want top dollar. Otherwise, mileage isn't there. I'm coming from a legit 42 mpg combined average. Hard to lose 20+ mpg.

You can get a fully loaded RAV4 Hybrid Limited for 35K
And it doesn't look like a hybrid.

Neither can get me 30 mpg.
And the sales I do isn't cold calling. I have offices at my customers buildings. It's not like me showing them a good time is the only reason I'm there. The relationship is bigger than the ride to a restaurant. Taking them in the Jetta would be tight and weird. But a full sized car would be no big deal. Most of our salesman have smaller cars. If there's a need to take a bunch of people, I can always drive my Tahoe.

I get what you are saying. Just seems you could meet a happy medium. Pay less for a good used SUV or truck. Maybe it isn't getting your optimal mpg, but you are saving $10K on the price.
Good luck to you in your search.

Infiniti G37. Go test drive one, you will never look at cars the same

30 mpg combined? I think the Hyundai Genesis are under $40k and probably close to 30 mpg highway. Comfortably hauls 4 adults. A lot of companies use them.
Might also want to check out the Lincoln MKZ hybrid. Midsized but 40 mpg combined. Camry or Accord hybrids are probably your best options though.

Tons of deals on F250s right now.

With the VW TDI debacle, looks like I'm getting a new car at the end of the year. Not many cars I want to drive, so looking for some options. Pretty limited to cars since I drive 70 miles a day.

I guess I should mention much of my driving is hwy/interstate, so me personally getting 30 mpg combined isn't that much of a stretch for a car that's say 25/33 rated or something.
Going to look at a few I've seen here. Accord has been on my radar, but nothing makes me want to drive that car. It fits the bill I guess, but it's just meh. I can just buy a ~20k car cash, which would be nice. So I may look at slightly used Accords.

Check out the GMC Acadia Denali. You can purchase one for under 40k.
Leather interior with heated/cooled seats, Nav system, DVD player for the child, sunroof and a sky roof, heads up display, 3 row seating, 2nd row seats are adjustable for leg room and cargo area seems larger than the Yukon/Tahoe when 3rd row seats are folded down.

70 miles a day isn't that much. Assuming it's all commuting, that's 35 each way. In my Tundra, $4 gets me 35 miles on the highway.

It's really not that much. Like you said, 35 interstate miles. If I went back to a truck, I'd be in the same note, plus an additional ~$200 in fuel compared to what I'm used to. Not trying to pay more than what I do now. Especially since I was a few months from paying this car completely off
.
Some people just can't read though. Most suggestions do not get remotely good mileage and are more than 40k.
I don't mind buying slightly used. That brings in a few Lexus options. Even the BMW 5 series. But buying premium fuel pretty much wipes out any decent mileage the BMW might get.
I'll probably end up in a camry or accord. But was hoping there'd be some options I was overlooking in that semi-luxury (Infiniti, Lexus, a acura) level of car

In order of leg room for front and rear, with leather, and accolades for interior styling. Most will give you the gas mileage you desire for highway driving as well.

Lexus ES series
Infinity G37
Test drive those
Also, BMW does some very solid lease deals if you wanted a 5 series

Love my Mazda 6 and I get 38mpg hwy.
But that, Camry, Accord, etc... are mid-sized cars. Not full.
They can carry 4 adults though.

Im in a Kia Optima Hybrid. It meets all your criteria. I don't like cars, always had trucks or SUV's but my new duty station is a long way, 200+. I needed something that wouldn't break the bank at the pump. Its proven to be a very good car.
