my folks live about three miles from the unincorporated village of Coteau. I have driven that stretch of Hwy 88 many times. As others in this thread have pointed out, this is a village with a school, a small catholic church, some houses and a very small baseball park. The locals are middle class to working class to no class. There are two fairly large trailer parks on each end of the town. Seeing dudes on a bike riding through town is pretty common. Cyclists riding through town is very uncommon and the ones in the area that do ride these roads wear reflective gear with lights etc.
at just before 6:30 AM heading westbound any sun that might be out would be behind you. The dude on a bike with no reflectors and dressed in all black was heading west (in the right lane) probably going from one of the trailers or small houses in town to the Exxon station at 88 and US90.
The article says he was hit by Labit Rd. The speed limit there heading out of the village used to be 45 mph but I think right now it is 35 mph. There are no sidewalks, no shoulder and a fence and trees on the northside of the road where this happened. I seriously doubt the driver of the truck ever saw him in the road. At the very least the dude on a bike would have been better off riding in the left hand lane and ducking off the road if there was oncoming traffic.
