yes, for me.

not sure if wanting a psychiatrist or psychologist in baton rouge area.

not currently taking any meds, coming off of a break up where communication is still the issue, so maybe it is me after all. i know thing that i know is that i just don't know anymore.

i've searched on here and everything that appears for me is dated, so hoping someone has a good recommendation for counselor / therapist / shrink, etc. that can help me and maybe later, if open, help my ex (no need to say it, she's my ex but have a child together and having good communication with her mother is important in my book).

Get a list from your insurance provider and start googling for reviews.

Best breakup advice ever came from my ole man in 1991 when he found me sulking over a Denham Springs hoochie mama who left me for a dude with a car.

"Boy... just remember this. There ain't no woman out there that a new woman can't make you forget."

Until then, the OT is here for you bud. Not many OTers know breakups quite like me. Two divorces and two baby mama's here. One was on purpose and one was not.
One day, in anywhere from 12-36 months, it'll get better.

psychiatrist or psychologist

You may want a psychiatrist in case you need meds. Baton Rouge has a limited number of them so it can often be hard to get an appointment. The psychiatrist would likely manage your meds and refer you to a therapist for regular sessions. A psychologist is more along the line of a therapist but with a PHD. They aren't medical doctors although I believe some can prescribe meds. They just don't go to medical school like a psychiatrist does.

You may want to start with an LPC or LCSW first as psychiatrists dont really do therapy much these days. Psychologists? LPCs/LCSWs can do as much with talk therapy.

If it looks like you might need meds, they can suggest a psychiatrist to you.

This. They usually will meet you once a month for a med check and farm the therapy out to a psycholgist or social worker.

If serious you need help more than the OP.

Why would one anonymous individual out of over 6 Billion having issues have an influence on your future.
