If I may make a suggestion, NYC before Christmas is an absolute nightmare. The city is crowded, hotels are expensive, restaurants are packed, taxis are not available, everywhere you go will be mobbed. I have taken my family to NYC on Christmas day, and stayed in the city a few days after Christmas, and that is actually very nice. I've been able to get fantastic hotel rooms at reasonable rates, eat where I want, get tickets to shows, etc. Not sure if you have the flexibility to do that, but I recommend going after Christmas if you can.

ETA: the the Waldorf is a dump, avoid.

Appreciate the feedback. I am actually open to going after Christmas. If I can get a better value, why not? Not sure if I can convince the wife, but we'll see.

You aren't going? Better put a spending limit in place.

The Hilton on 53rd and 6th is decent and right by the park and Rockefeller Center.

ETA: The Waldorf is very hit or miss. Some of the rooms are in rough shape.

I went last year, and my experience was completely different.

Paid $179 a night for the Doubletree in Chelsea. Used uber if I needed a cab, and Opentable when I needed a restaurant. Never waited anywhere for anything. Anything "touristy" that we did we did on hours when others wouldn't. (eg. Looking at store windows at 8 AM, or going to the first show when going to a show.)

Maybe you're just acting like a dumbass tourist and then being surprised when you have a dumbass tourist experience?

Only negative for us was temps in the 70s the whole week.

Plan ahead, purchase ahead and you can certainly have a great time.

I have never stayed in a Hotel in NYC but I hear good things about the Hyatt right next to Grand Central. 3 minute walk straight up 42nd to Bryant Park, 10 minutes straight up 42nd to Times Square, 15 minutes to Rockafeller Center

My BIL lives up there. The family and I went up for thanksgiving last year.

We did the parade and also went to see the floats the night before. Also saw the lion king on Broadway as well as the radio city music hall Christmas spectacular. Went to see the Statue of Liberty and the science museum as well.

Not sure what to tell you about the hotel. We just stayed at my BIL's place in Brooklyn.

Getting around on the subway was super easy via Google maps. It tells you what lines to get on and what stops to take. Also used uber for taxis, although that was only to and from the airport. We used the subway to get everywhere. I was scared due to after going years ago and trying the navigate the subway, but as I mentioned Google maps worked incredibly.

Yeah the guy that said it's hard to get cabs around Christmas....what?

I guess it may get busy around Rockafeller and the theater district but it's doable. I'm sure your family would enjoy coming after Christmas as well to avoid the crowds. I second a kid friendly broadway show and Bryant Park also has skating for free(or a rental if you don't have skates)

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island will be cold as frick. Bundle up if you do it; I would not recommend it with kids at that time of year. There is a lot of standing in line, security, and ice cold wind whips in off the harbor like knives.

Aladdin and/or Lion King are absolute must dos. Aladdin was very good and the kids will love it.

FAO Schwarz on 5th Ave near Central Park.

Carriage ride through Central Park.

Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center.

The frick? I'm in NYC probably once a week, so no, I'd say I'm probably not acting like a dumbass tourist.
