Today is Home advice day on the OT, for lack of a better forum to post on.

All of my windows are 20 years old, the double-paned kind, and all the seals are busted, and are constantly foggy or milky inside the plenums. Can't ever see out of them.

What am I looking at per window to replace with something else high efficiency that will come with a nice long warranty so I don't have to worry about this shite again for a long time?

I already figured about $350, looking for additional input.

I'd probably get Windows 7. Good operating software

Installed, I presume.

What's the standard upcharge if the window is 50 ft off the ground and I won't allow you to take a truck to the area?

Honestly $350 is pretty close to the proper response on this one

Honestly it will come down to brand/type/install.

I will be looking into it soon as well.

Getting ready to resurface and paint our oak cabinets in the kitchen. Going to do a light grey and new granite or quartz counter tops, with new stainless appliances.

The windows in my house are wood type (not wood windows, but what would have been an upgrade at the time) and starting to become drafty. House was built in 1996, but energy efficiency has came a long way since then.

Also, considering removing the double window in the kitchen with french doors, extending the deck and closing in the door on my back sun room where the deck access is.

We have done a lot of upgrading so far on our house since buying it a year ago. Beautiful house, but want to make it our own. Our first thing we did, immediately after closing, was ripping up 2 year old carpet in the living room and putting down dark hard wood flooring. New carpet in the 3 bedrooms, paint and new trim. Also, re-did the guest bathroom.

Sorry for rambling on, just something the wife and I like doing together (Home projects).

I don't even care about the efficiency, I wouldn't mind cheaper single-paned glass, just so they don't start getting foggy again in 5 years. What I'd lose on my utility bill is potentially gained on the lower product cost.

But my wife starts walking around acting like she knows what the frick she's talking about, and says the double-paned adds to the property value and all that shite.

I do care about my home value, but this winter is what is making me want to upgrade.

It was damn cold here in Illinois and I prefer cheaper utility bills.

Depends on the type of window you get. If you’re going dbl hung wood veneer better figure closer to $1k/window installed.

I recently replaced 8 windows and shopped around quite a bit, so speaking from experience.

Yeah, frick that shite. Illinois is a different story than metro ATL. We never really get that frickin' retard cold with the negative sub-zero shite. It'll got hot as frick though, but only brutal for a couple months. Single pane windows aren't gonna kill me, know what I'm sayin' there, sizzlechest?

Haven't had to deal with this; live in an apt building in NYC... but I see commercials pretty much every day for replacement windows by Andersen. Not sure if they have much of a presence down there, or if they're pricey. I just see the commercials so much in the morning that it comes to mind. So thought I'd mention it.

Double hung used to mean paired pulley on both sides of each window so the sashes could move up and down as needed. Wood veneer means wood on the outside of metal windows.

For summer insullation, double hung works, but a much cheaper alternative is exterior window screens that let a certain % of sunlight through. For south or west facing windows, 80% screening will really cool the room and lead to a lot less damage to wooden floors and all furniture, yet you can still see out.

I want to do this too. Are you going to paint cabinets? I'm afraid the grain will show thru the paint. Any ideas on this project?

I don't understand for the life of me how people spend four and $500 per window. I bought vinyl double pane windows from a Do It Best hardware store and it came out of a factory in Mississippi and were around $80 a piece. That's material only that doesn't include installation

These are all individual custom sizes for each window. These weren't standard sizes off the shelf. They were all custom made for my application
