Elementary school students attended school in Sandy Hook on Monday for the first time since a shooting rampage there killed 20 first-graders and six educators.

Joseph Erardi, Newtown's School Superintendent, said it was a great and uneventful day for the just under 400 students at the new 86,000-square-foot Sandy Hook Elementary School, which was built to replace the one torn down after the December 2012 shooting.

"I spent all day there and it felt the way that it should feel," he said. "Students were excited to be there."

The $50 million replacement was built on the same property as the former school, but not in the old footprint. All that remains are two large concrete slabs containing dinosaur footprints that also sat outside the old building.

quote:

Because of retirements and transfers, about 60 percent of the staff members from the original Sandy Hook are still with the school. Others left through retirement or job changes, and a handful chose to transfer as part of their recovery process, Erardi said

Is it just me, or is wanting to stay there and work there kind of weird?

Did they tear down Columbine HS after their massacre?
$50 million is quite a sum for just rebuilding a school.
But, then again, obviously a unique situation and I wouldn't want my kid to go to the same building so many others were killed.

If you're a member of and invested in the community, you would want to rebuild.

no but that completely re did the insides making new halls and walls so the school did not resemble the old school. To help with the psychological effects on the students.

Town put it to a vote and it was overwhelmingly approved.

Not if it is your hometown. Natural to want to help rebuild your hometown. Why do Louisiana people keep returning after hurricanes?

No, Columbine is still there.

It does seem high, but that's not out of line for entirely new facilities these days. I used to live in an area that budged almost $100 million for construction of an entirely new high school and athletic facilities.

FWIW....I think the Fairfield County area in CT is about twice the size of East Baton Rouge with 2-3 times the average income...so there's a very solid tax base behind it.

Needless to say, home prices in that town compared to other CT towns are quite low. We were looking to buy in CT and we noticed the difference in prices.

Fairfield County is a great place. The in-laws live there.

I assure everyone I am not being flippant - but, I sure hope they saved some money in the budget for a fricking armed security guard or three.

Sincerely. Nothing is more precious than our children and we should guard them with armed, rough men who are ready at a moment's notice to kill anyone who would seek to harm them.

Well, once the storm surge sweeps you up, you just kind of ride it out and when the water recedes, it usually puts you back down pretty close to where it picked you up.
