Article with video...

This weekend in Dallas was the Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale. It's where the best of the best are sold each year. The old record was $170,000. As you can see from the video, that record was shattered.

Holy shite! Can they expect to make any of that money back from breeding or was that just price just for dick measuring?

Thats a whole lot of money for some damn horns.

In the process of bidding for some expensive cattle genes myself so decided to look up the record. How in the hell does a damn jersey cow have it. Would have thought for sure it would be some stellar epd Angus.

It's an exception, not the rule. Kind of like the difference in buying a normal horse and a racehorse. 'Prize' animals meant for breeding, whether it's a dog, cattle, sheep, etc., can carry some high prices because rich people can be fricking loony, too.

3S Danica has unprecedented tip to tip horn growth for her age. One of the fastest ever recorded.

Sounds like that could cause problems, but I know nothing.

A lot of times it's a group of people who buy a % of the animal and then make money selling semen, embryos, and even clones.

Yeah, swelling of your bank account.

Seriously though, there has been a big push to breed the widest horns for 2 decades now. While that's a ll well and good, a lot of the classic twisty horn shapes have been selected against or culled out.

I'm no big timer in the industry. I have a good mix of color and different horn shapes. I don't really care about excessive tip to tip. My widest horned animal is the bull in my sig pic. he is 74.5" tip to tip.

The world record widest horned bull is now over 100" tip to tip, and the world record steer is over 120" tip to tip.

The world record widest horned cow is the mother to the widest horned bull. It's not luck, the genetics have to be there.

So, you can see why people wanted this cow. She doesn't have the record yet, but they track horn growth monthly, and she's projecting to possibly be the widest horned cow ever recorded.

They'll do embryo flushes and let other cows have calves out of her and the widest horned bull. Out of the 100's of calves that result from the pairing, maybe a few will turn into something special. You don't know until it's on the ground and you start measuring them at certain ages.

For sure. $1100 is the most I've ever paid for a cow. I've bought a few of them for less than $500.

I'd say $750 to $1000 is the going price for a standard run of the mill longhorn cow.

Brah, you can't be in the longhorn business without a Cadillac with horns on the grill.

That's step 1.
