But that was a slow creep until Katrina. It got steeper after that.
Why are some of you so dumb?

12 or so hour standoff w killer barricaded in his apt. Came out w a loaded weapon
Yep, walked out and they started yelling “drop the gun! drop the gun!. He then just put it down.
Someone should have lit him up.
Ironically it happened on Freret St. a year later Bill Long was shot at his bakery a few blocks away on Freret. That started the drastic decline of that neighborhood. 40 years later, Freret St has turned back around and is thriving. Gentrification is slowly turning uptown into livable neighborhoods.

It’s been pointed out several times in this thread that Nola from 2006 until around 2012-14 was the best time for the city in probably 30 years.
Please explain why someone would think the city declined steeply after Katrina?

No
.Based upon information received from the informant the police set up surveillance of 3422 Freret Street where the defendant lived on December 3, 1984 at about 7:00 p.m.The defendant, upon becoming aware of the presence of the police, barricaded himself in the house. At 7:05 a.m. the next morning, the defendant emerged from the residence and surrendered. He was carrying a loaded gun which he placed on the front steps. The police seized and tested the gun and determined that it was the gun used to kill Posey. The defendant was then arrested for murder and a search warrant issued.Found inside his residence were a blue girl's bike, a navy blue knit cap, a box of .32 caliber bullets and a dark-colored jacket.

Probably Katrina
In the early 90s, Memphis was clean and was one of the fastest growing cities in the US. It always had its bad parts, for sure, but now the city is falling apart. It's dangerous and dilapidated. It started it's slide when the blacks got their mayor. Him being black wasn't the problem. The problem was that he was corrupt as frick. He wanted white people to leave, said as much. He stopped mowing the city owned property and merged the school system with the county. That was a disaster. It was on it's way down fast. When Katrina hit, a lot of the New Orleans 9th ward residents moved to Memphis. It quickly accelerated the demise. I'm afraid it is way beyond saving. I know this is a New Orleans thread but I think Katrina had some collateral damage on nearby major cities as well.

Perhaps the issue is perception from within vs outside of the area. I suppose I equate the decline I see from afar as being the result of Katrina, though thinking about it now, I think time may be running together in my old brain.
But the fact is that perception in other parts of the state certainly links a decline in NOLA with Katrina. It used to feel like, whatever else was going on, the tourist/visitor areas were relatively safe, at least in terms of violent crime. Then it didn't. Again, that may be perception from the outside, but I can tell you it is almost universal with the folks I talk to. If that is or was not so, the city did not do a good job of getting the word out.

Ah ok, I see. He murdered the guy outside Fat Harry’s, the standoff was later.

In reality, it goes back all the way to the antebellum era when NOLA was the premier slave market for slave traders in the US. The city never fully recovered from the civil war and was left with a huge population full of emancipated slaves, most of whom couldn’t read or write. Some of them migrated north but the majority of them stayed and grew their family roots there.

Katrina was a great chance for the city to reset. It doubled down and now is total dumpster fire. I for one avoid NO, opting for Mobile or Savanah if I want to taste of deep south city with history.
