This city as a whole leadership & City heads have the IQ of a Soup Can. Literally am surprised they ordered red lights with the colors red, green and yellow on them. Everybody in these departments are married to each other using maiden names to circumvent the nepotism rule...

I wonder who did the architecture or engineering design? Steep staircases isn’t an operator problem that’s a design flaw.

Among them were steep boat stairways, improperly placed equipment and corrosion. The latter issue was also a problem on ferries Metal Shark built for New York City in 2017.

Pretty sure they do everything in house.

Yep. I remember that. Didn’t realize it was ladder issues but I remember NY had issues with their ferries.

RTA is managed by a French Company, Transdev. They basically manage taxis and buses in North America. They were the project manager from day 1. Everything was built under their guidance.

That doesn’t say they are naval architects

Was it the ladder issue or the latter issue?

I was told by a friend in the maritime industry that RTA doesn't want those boats approved to carry passengers. As the RTA doesn't have the infrastructure to operate those boats loading and unloading passengers.

He said if the boats are OKed, the RTA would look stupid because their docking/ landings are not built to accommodate those boats to safely handle passengers.

Dont know if true or not.

You think they ever saw these regulations before the coast guard inspected the vessel?

No way anybody on the Govt payroll either cared to or was able to read those regs. They will have to hire an outside contractor to read and understand those regs.

Did you not read...

quote:

cited past inspections by the Coast Guard's Morgan City unit as proof the boats were ready to enter service

There are different types and levels of inspections. The vessel could have passed initial inspection deeming it seaworthy and ready for use. However since this will be a passenger vessel, different inspections are required. This inspection, I'm assuming was a COI, focusses more on safety systems and crew training. Those "design flaws" don't deem the vessel unworthy for use as is evident by the previous CG approval. Say the shipbuilder installed a set of stairs at a 50° angle. That may be fine for a Navy ship or offshore platform, but since it's a passenger vessel, it can't be more than a 45° angle. (Just an example, don't know if that's a thing) Doesn't mean the vessel isn't seaworthy, just means there needs to be modifications because of the job it's performing.

quote:

Apparently, some equipment on the RTA’s boats was improperly placed, he said.

That's not a "design flaw". That's essentially saying an extinguisher was in the wrong place, or a smoke detector wasn't mounted in the proper spot

New Orleans ferries have been almost exclusively catamaran hulls for well over 120 years, especially the car carriers. Maybe the pedestrian Frank X. Armiger currently serving Canal/Algiers is single hull, but the last one was the Josie from the late 1800s.

Metal Shark builds a lot of boats, baw. And they sell them all over the world. I'd bet the issues weren't their fault

In other words, before you try to run a boat we suggest reading books about boats.

Hang on. Landrieu didn't push s takeover. After the CCC tolls were voted out, DOTD threw a hissy fit and said they were no longer going to run the nola ones. So they put the contract out to bid. No one bid. So the state was like F it we will just shut it down. Finally RTA at the last minute stepped up and said they would run them.

Problem is, they are not a priority for RTA.

Has The contractor ever built a ferry before? You would think they would know where to locate stuff.

The city is building a new canal st. terminal, they can use the old terminal with new boats but it's not ideal. New terminal delayed because of high river.

Not code.

COI: Certificate of Inspection. Its mentioned in the article.

An 835 is essentially a ticket that the USCG gives you. That's just what they are called.
