This is Mitch Landrieus fault as he fomented the RTA takeover of the ferries and then tried to rush the new ferries into service before he left office. https://www.nola.com/news/article_f3f74398-bf97-11e9-b44c-5f1d106436f7.html

The Coast Guard didn’t provide the RTA with a written list of problems but instead encouraged it to review the entirety of marine regulations, she said.

You think they ever saw these regulations before the coast guard inspected the vessel?

U.S. Coast Guard officials said Friday they inspected the boats in July and found them lacking on multiple fronts. To remedy the problems, the RTA said it will hire a project manager.

I’ll bet after an exhaustive worldwide search for the PM requiring travel to exotic locales, the winning candidate will amazingly be found at a NOLA family reunion.

In an interview, new RTA CEO Alex Wiggins disputed the idea that the boats had failed inspection, saying the process was paused at his request after the Coast Guard found issues on the boats on the first day of inspections.

"At his request." My fricking arse at his request Those inspectors walked their asses off that vessel as soon as they realized it wasn't where it needed to be. And Mr. Wiggins better be glad they did.

As someone who carries a USGC license, works hand in hand with the USCG on inspections, and is responsible for making sure our vessel is compliant with all USGC regulations, I can tell you that Alex Wiggins... has fricked up

"We didn't FAIL inspection! They just didn't finish the inspection."

Bruh, that is not how you want to handle this one, I promise. They are going to check every thing under the sun on that vessel. They're going to make sure the fire extinguishers are the correct shade of red.

"We are confident that a capable operator would have long since fulfilled their responsibility by obtaining their certificates of inspections, and would have put these vessels into service many months ago," the company said in a statement.

O snap. Those COIs they are referring to are the ones we go through. Pain in the arse. I see several 835's in the RTAs future

Looks like the company in Jeanerette don’t know what they’re doing. The city ordered it, they didn’t build it. Perhaps they should have used a New Orleans s area company like midship marine. Why would any competent engineer live in Jeanerette??

Metal Shark in Jennerette had the vessel inspected after construction by the Morgan City CG division and it was cleared for service. But since the operator (RTA) took over, they are responsible for their COI, which they have failed miserably at so far apparently

Granted, there may have been a few minor issues with construction that weren't ideal, but if they had approval from the Morgan City division, they're good and it falls on the RTA

Quit being so cynical. The Landrieu's have "served" NOLA for decades, I'm sure there's a family member willing to serve again.

Wait, this is a metal shark boat? Metal shark is legit and they build boats for the coast guard and military. If I was rolling the dice between who fricked up between metal shark and the government of new Orleans, I know where my money would go.

Catamaran hulls: meet debris floating just below the surface moving down river.

Who decided that multiple hulls were the future? We used to take the Algiers Ferry daily and the old fashioned single hulls were good and fairly dependable. And there were a lot of maritime workers who understood the way they handled the river currents and counter currents.

Metal Shark? Are you kidding me?

You should probably do a little research on them. They’re a pretty big deal

That doesn’t necessarily mean the NOLA division will approve it.

When it comes to these CG stations the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing.

In Morgan City green might mean go and in New Orleans green might mean stop and in Key West green means yield.

Also I might add some fuel to the fire, Metal Shark is based out of Jennerette but they also have a yard in Mobile.

Not sure where these boats were built but the mobile yard may have done some work on them

Being that MC CG was involved I’m guessing jenerette finished the job
