I think LE is trying argue that both of these laws are "progressive" so we can't support one without supporting the other...
which is absurd

not yet, but its progressing that way.
Legalization of mary jane in NOLA will be for one primary reason: tax revenue.
The City had a perfect opportunity to increase revenue through a tobacco license, and they missed the opportunity.

how exactly are you comparing the two?
80% of adult American's do not smoke. Their freedoms are being catered to in this instance.

the modern liberal-progressive sees the illegality of weed as a travesty, b/c adults should be able to make their own choices
however, tobacco should not be smoked in bars, b/c that's for hicks and we should ensure that nobody is allowed to act like a hick

85% of adult Americans do not smoke marijuana.
Yet, a law to legalize it would be catering to a small minority.

Are you saying that someone that smokes in a bar that allows it is self centered?
Smokers in general have no manners towards people that do not smoke. Whether you're in a smokey bar or just walking on the street.

making something legal by removing legislation and making something illegal by adding legislation isn't a very good comparison.
personally, i enjoy the non smoking rules. but i will always believe it is up to the business owner to establish the rules in his/her establishment.

It's the business owner we're defending, not the smoker.

the freedom to smoke (or say no) isn't really the focus here. the focus is on the business's right to regulate smoking
there are non-smoking bars in nola that cater to those who want to go to a bar and not be bothered with smoke
there are smoking bars in nola that cater to those who smoke or don't mind it
let the market sort it out. if 80% of people hate smoke, then non-smoking bars will dominate the market

You saved $5. Gov made $20. Easy way to get revenue stream. Make it an incentive for people to park illegal and profit. Do so without having to buy the private lot and pay the taxes that the private enterprise does. Incentivize parking on the public curb by making it a bit cheaper. Private enterprise loses your money but gov gains the revenue....without any capital investment accept paying the employee who wrote the ticket. It's not useless to NOLA. They seem to have thought that revenue maker out pretty good.

Un-fricking-believable.
95% of Americans aren't gay, to hell with gay marriage.
80% of Americans aren't black, we should still be able to own them as slaves.

Laws catering to the minority are the new norm and here is one catering to the majority.

Why would you want to go to a bar that is actively trying to kill you? Exactly. I shouldn't have to worry about that.
You should get new friends or start smoking.

85% of Americans don't smoke weed because it is illegal. Im sure that number will start to increase.
The bigger point is they are starting to realize the harmlessness of weed. In the same breath, they realize cigarette smoke is detriment to the lives of most Americans. Dating back to the early 2000's when they started to ban cigarette smoke in businesses and restaurants
