um, eventually it will connect from BTR to houston heading west and Nola to atlanta going east
im not sure why this is so difficult to understand.
improving our transportation infrastructure should be applauded

Agreed. But this won't be an infrastructure boost.

I can only imagine how crappy these trains will be after a year or two of usage. What a waste.
If you've been on Amtraks in the last 20 years, you'd notice that they are nicer and more comfortable than flying. Certainly better than taking a bus.

Meanwhile, our Capitol has the only spot on I-10 where drivers are forced to go down to one lane and I-12 remains a gridlock at the Tchefuncte River for most hours of the day
There is funding already in place to start work on fixing this debacle finally. Design work is underway now and construction will start next year. It's ridiculous that it's taken so long to even get started.

Already a link connecting New Orleans to Houston, and it doesn't go through Baton Rouge. The new link they are adding to Baton Rouge is basically a spur.
I think the Baton Rouge extension would aim towards Shreveport and Dallas, right? No plans for that in the recent maps provided by Amtrak. But it would definitely help justify the line and likely help out a lot of towns in Louisiana.

Incorrect
That happens in San Antonio

Is this going to be a high-speed train?
Also, if it only goes from downtown New Orleans to downtown Baton Rouge without any stops in between, I'm not sure what good that does.

The plan was to have a stop on Essen in Br for the hospitals and a stop at MSY

Bridges crumbling everywhere. Roads wash out and cave in any time it rains too hard. A freeze/snow can make potholes big enough to lose a Volkswagen bug in. Repaving projects take months or years, but only after years of planning. Areas that once had just a couple houses are now covered up with subdivisions and traffic on two-lane roads that sees cars stacked 50 deep at every intersection on every afternoon because we need a three year study to figure out where to put a damn red light. All of this, and the great leader's "infrastructure plan" is going to sink untold billions in a fricking pointless train?

No doubt. The question is.... how big of an annual deficit for operating costs will tax payers be on the hook for?

One would think New Orleans would prioritize upgrading its pumps/canal systems and roads first.
If we are going to spend money on infrastructure, let’s fix the broken system first.

Haven’t seen the list of projects, but if a new Mississippi River bridge isn’t on that “infrastructure” list it will be infuriating.

They’re potentially getting this funding because the project has been absorbed into future Amtrak plans.
The original Br-Nola rail plan didn’t have anything to do with Amtrak which would have worked better. I don’t want to have to deal with Amtrak to take the train from BR to Nola. It would have been much easier to run it like a suburban commuter rail system used in big cities all over the country that extends the routes out past their urban mass transit system.
ETA: and also if it’s Amtrak you’re not going to have stops at MSY, Essen, etc like the original plan had.
In order words it would suck arse if Amtrak takes over.

Can't believe they are actually going to do this.
Yes. I found a map but I don't know how accurate this is. Unfortunately the new MSY terminal is the opposite side of the airport now as the tracks they wanted to use.
I think the downtown station was going to be near the Entergy building that they just renovated on Government Street.

agreed, i suppose i shouldnt be too optimistic that this will go off smoothly

as it could be the first step toward funding a long-sought commuter rail line between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Does anyone actually want it?

know the rail link is controversial in of itself, but I'd rather the feds shovel money into infrastructure than most of the other nonsense they spend on.
Commuter rail isn’t infrastructure if it already doesn’t exist. It’s an absolute waste of money for this commuter route to exist, especially considering neither city is a walking city like in the NE.

Unfortunately a lot of the "infrastructure" bill won't benefit America's infrastructure.
Yeah, like commuter rail.

I can tell you what type of people will and won't use this train.

Well they’re not going to do
this anymore if this new plans wins. Which would suck.

So you could live in trashy Baton Rouge and commute to trashy New Orleans or vice versa.

It also includes billions to rebuild large office buildings in cities.
Yeah we’re all working from home and studies say that’s going to stick. so your taxpayer dollars are going to rebuild buildings where not many people go anymore. Super idea.
