Jack Ruby had to kill Oswald how he did due to the fact he bungled getting Oswald out of Dallas the day of the assassination... important people gave Ruby the job of coordinating the logistics seeing as he knew Dallas... but Ruby's influence (which he embellished) in Dallas had a limit... he did it because those same important people were in position to kill every person Ruby considered important in his life from children to the elderly

I think more of a wannabe, I used to read up on all this a long time ago but I think Ruby grew up in Chicago and as a kid he was like a shoeshine boy or gofer for the Capone gang, became enamored with their lifestyle and wanted people in Dallas to think he was associated with the mob but never really was

He was noticed and since he was so familiar to them it wasn't a big deal. Rumor probably comes from the fact that Ruby slipped in right before the police car backed up and blocked the entrance and he couldn't anymore. To anyone down the ramp, it would've looked like he got out of it. Vincent Bulgogi book on the assassination is great

Agreed. From what I understand Ruby was a associate of some shade of gray, and Oswald was an off-kilter hanger-on that was known to pop into Marcello's office in the hotel/restaurant off Airline Drive. That's why I say there might not have been direct orders from Marcello to have Oswald go to Dallas and kill Kennedy, but he may have been tricked or threatened into the task.
