Neil Armstrong was a civilian when he was selected for Apollo 11. And I think, when he joined NASA as well.

He was a very calm, soft-spoken, cerebral person. Not flashy, not cocky, all business. Exactly the type of person you'd want to command the greatest mission in the history of mankind.

He did not "dick" Buzz Aldrin out of being the first Human on the Moon. The selection was out of his control.

Upon his retirement, he remained soft-spoken and was the opposite of a "media-whore". I am personally, glad he was this way... and not schlecking "come to Wapokaneta Ford on Saturday for OUT OF THIS WORLD DEALS on the new 1976 Pintos!"

No it isn't. You take very small, very minor, easily explainable items, you then run with them to an illogical end, and ignore all the facts indicating the correct conclusion.

Probably Shepherd. Armstrong was just known for being very private. I've never heard anything about him being rude.

There's certainly color but capturing it sometimes difficult under the harsh sunlight with no atmosphere has to be difficult.

I don’t really have a definitive theory. But what if only a select few were aware of the filming. Just the astronauts and a small film crew. It could be recorded and played later while they orbit the earth.

You need not expound beyond "I don’t really have a definitive theory". That is the trademark of your ilk. The thing is, we do have definitive facts, that prove your guesses wrong.

What you are committing is "cultural vandalism", for whatever reason. This is not my own term, but a borrowed concept. A small percentage of the population just is wrong-headed:

- if the Mona Lisa was unguarded, it wouldn't be long before it was splashed with paint and ruined
- if the Declaration of Independence was unprotected, it would soon be shredded, literally, by a vandal.
- Medal of Honor recipient M. Murphy's Memorial Destroyed

It is, unfortunately, what it is.

The big prick is buzz Aldrin. He was known for being abrasivw then and he got worse due to alcoholism and depression.
I met Al Bean (Apollo 12) at a book signing that was a day after Buzz's book signing. Folks who went to both commented how different the two were with the public. Al was about the most humble and pleasant man you could imagine.

The fact that he was on a sound stage in Hollywood at the time makes this photo sad to me. Maybe they sent a monkey up in that thing?

Neil Armstrong was not a prick. He was just an intensely private person even before he became an astronaut. Read the biography First Man and you’ll see that Armstrong is truly a man to be admired both personally and professionally.

I like Aldrin, and he had depression issues after Apollo 11, but over the years his second wife made a cash cow out of him and he has pretty much whored himself out. Mad props to the old man though for slugging Bart Siebrel.

Shepard was a typical major alpha male type. You either got along with him or you didn’t. There was no in-between. He was devoted to his daughters and even raised his niece like a daughter from a young age. The biography Light This Candle is also an excellent read.

My Father was a NASA engineer. A F’ing rocket scientist who worked on the Moon Shot. He’d kick all your non-believing asses if he were still alive..

I was able to watch a couple of rockets and 1 shuttle take off, while chilling on Satellite Beach. Was really cool.

The rockets were always louder and made the ground shake more.

His biographer called him "Don Draper in a space suit."
