You know what's not threatening? The dog in the OP.
How do we honestly know that? You maybe right, but he can't even convince us of that and we are only hearing his side of the story.

Sad story, especially the part about the dog being shot but still alive. The man should have at least had the decency to finish him off, rather than letting him suffer.
That said, your girlfriend should have kept her dog off other people's property. There's no way to know for sure what the dog did or didn't do (e.g., growl at the man's son).
ETA: Just realized the thread is 12 pages, so this has probably already been discussed. Sorry for your loss.

I love my dogs, but kids are certainly a higher priority.
Too many people in the world don't understand that. It's one thing if you go around shooting dogs for fun, but if a dog is in your yard and your kids are around with it growling...as a dog owner and if it was my dog I would be upset, but I would be understanding at the same time.

Alot of the responses in here are exactly why I train my dog to never growl, bark(for other reasons as well), bite, or anything that could be conceived as "threatening". It's why I always have him on a leash since he is so playful.
Too many people in here are more than ok with having an itchy trigger finger when it comes to someone else's pet.

To be completely honest with you, I don't give one dick-tickling frick about your dog's life when it's around my kids.
Your dog could raise all kinds of hell and growl, snarl, etc and I won't care if it's on the leash. The second you lose control of an aggressive animal, you lose your aggressive animal permanently. Responsible dog owners shouldn't be upset in this thread IMO.
I have a dog and he stays on a leash unless he's in the backyard. He's also a four month yellow lab so....

You think dogs go a little crazy over a female in heat? I'd go more than a little crazy over protecting my kids. I'd kill a thousand dogs to protect a child. I'd commit dog genocide. Dogocide. I'd be like the Hitler of mutts.

I think most parents feel this way.
However, unless this guy had a gun on him while he was outside with his kid and his dog.... he went BACK inside, got his gun, came back outside, and shot the dog.
That's at least a little fricked up.

one person made the assumption that he went back inside and the whole thread ran with it
i know a lot of people that carry a weapon most of the time (even though you'd never know it)
he could easily have been a gun carrier and not had to go back inside....but that wouldnt be as good of a story to make him look like a savage

You'll find plenty of idiots on this board that think shite talk is a legitimate reason to attack a person.

My finger isn't itchy. It stays straight and off the trigger until I intend to fire.
Sorry you're an idiot that will die for his dog.

Absolutely true. However, him lying about it when initially confronted leads me to believe it wasn't a scenario where if he doesn't shoot then his dog and kid might be attacked.
I could be wrong though we don't know.
For me...if there was an option to head back inside instead of shooting then I think THAT is the better parenting decision.
Well son...I shot those people's pet and left it do die under that tree to protect YOU. Don't feel responsible for that though son....
Just my perspective.

Labs are very aggressive, especially the yellow ones...
After the movie Marley and me every other dumbass in America went out and bought one.
You Better socialize that 4 month old puppy now, or someone will be hitting it with bullets more times than Lois Learner hit her hard drive with a hammer.

I'm not an idiot sir. You just have no value for human life if you're willing to shoot someone over a simple confrontation. It's pathetic actually.

Assault isn't a simple confrontation. The fact that you would want to beat my arse for shooting your dog that was threatening my family is pathetic, sir.
You edited. I'll be fair.

Anyone catch what part of MS the OP is from?

The guy started off lying by saying he didn't own any guns other than BB guns. So I assume the dog posing a threat to his kid is a lie as well.
This
I also question if its true that his dog is in heat or that his kid was even in the yard at all.
I just don't see any reason for him to lie to a neighbor about shooting the dog or owning a gun if it went down the way he later claimed.
