Negotiating Starting Salary

How many of you all did this? I'd really like to hear people from the employer side on this. What your opinion is of incoming employees who negotiate starting salaries.

I like it. Gives me an opportunity right away to assert dominance.

Why wouldn't you do this?

If you have the experience and a job already, why wouldn’t you?

If you DON'T negotiate it gives off a signal that you are desperate and maybe that desperation comes from something that isn't showing up on your resume or the interview.

Depends on the individuals experience with the particular position. I'm not negotiating salary with someone with little to no experience for given position. If I see you are successful in a similar role elsewhere and seek you out, we negotiate.

I negotiated my salary at my first job out of college. You should be negotiating for every new position you start unless the offer incredibly high

Idk, I always have but I had a friend the other day say that employers hate that shite. I just assumed everyone did this but it got me thinking

Depends on your experience. Wear a fun tie to the interview.
Who on here has successfully gotten a job by writing a number down on a piece and paper, slid it over to hiring manager and walked out?

I will give you an honest opinion, they move to a 2nd pile and I will not go back to that pile unless the initial pile is exhausted with no viable candidate.
We usually have a range for salary that depends on experience and the interview. If they counter and are wanting more than that top range number, then the above takes place.
I do not fault people for wanting the most and when making job changes that is the best time to increase your salary. With that being said, most people think they are worth more than they really are.
To go with today's theme - the younger the candidate is, the more entitled they feel.

I did and ended up with way better pay check than I was prepared to take.

How is a prospective employee supposed to know your range? Are you upfront about it? If not, it wouldn't seem unreasonable for a job seeker to negotiate for salary.
On the other hand, if the person knows about the range and counters higher without justification then you are justified in setting them to the side.

Salaries are for the poor. Work for yourself and renegotiate your own pay every single day.

Don't forget about benefits. You can also negotiate PTO, company vehicles, etc.

Honestly, it's a mark of strong will in my opinion. I don't want my employees to be push overs and I respect the shite out of a candidate that negotiates his/her salary.

I did it. Got about 17% more than offer. The real benefit is when annual raises come, and you build off of the higher number.

That's the way I always looked at it and I've never had a prospective employer balk at a counter offer. I just assumed everyone negotiated salary

They are posted on website or recruiters are informed what the ranges are when sending us resumes. It is not a top secret item.

This happens more times than it should.
I am much more lax and respect people that negotiate other benefits. Those candidates usually see a bigger picture.

I only negotiate ending salaries. It is more efficient. Skip the beginning and go straight to the ending point.

I told my employer what I wanted and that I was worth every penny.
