When i was in the furniture industry, the local stores would allow some negotiating, and the chains would not. EVERYTHING can be negotiated, however.

You will probably have to ask for the manager. Hopefully, you specifically include the salesman in your negotiating. They should receive their commission based upon the time/effort spent with you in making your selections prior to you wanting to talk about pricing.

Cash, cash, cash...

Bring cash to buy and show them cash on the spot. Depends on the place, but at a minimum I would offer cash for the pre-tax amount. If you have $3000 worth of furniture to buy, I would offer $2800 cash out the door. Worst case, pay $3000 total and make them include delivery in the price.

Do yourself a favor and go to American Factory Direct on the Northshore as well.

I found a bedroom set I liked when I built my new house. I found a set I liked in a local store for $8k plus tax. I found a dealer in North Carolina (furniture capital of the US) and got it delivered for $5500

Olindes will do 25% off sticker. I just bought a new bedroom set after the flood. Ashley Furniture (somehow related to Olindes) will do 20-25% off as well, that's where we got 2 sofas from.

There is huge markup at lower end furniture stores like Ivan Smith Ashley etc

You have a lot of leverage there

Havertys is a little tougher to get a deal. Negotiate protection plans, delivery, upgraded upholstery

At nicer stores you get better furniture but the negotiating slows

Please include more details, as in what company? I'll be needing a complete set up of just about everything in the house in the next 6 months. I'd rather stay away from the low end stuff or the crazy high price stuff. I'm looking for upper mid priced furniture. Tell me about he North Carolina hook up.

Purchased $2200 office desk from Hurwitz Mintz and could not haggle anything.
Purchased $6700 couch and love seat along with a reading chair with ottoman from another furniture store and knocked off about a grand.

It has been awhile, but google North Carolina online furniture shopping, or something similar. You should get good results to point you in the right direction

I negotiate every time I buy a big ticket item no matter where I am. You also have to feel out the place prior to buying, even if they won't take anything off the price, majority of the time they will throw in a free warranty. I have haggled over a $100 bookshelf. Always point out the defect or the downside of the item. Never show how much you like the item. Good luck.
