Just pay the price.

My wife mentioned this. Told her between me and the engagement ring and wedding band, she had enough wrapped around her fingers.

was really surprise at how the diamond wholesalers would just ship diamonds to an individual with no questions asked, no deposit or insurance required
Because to them, they are what they really are : basically worthless.
They are only expensive to the end consumer. This is why you can buy a diamond for $5k, walk out of the door, come immediately back in to sell it, and they won't give you jack for it.

If at any point when arguing with a woman you use the line
“but, it’s exactly the same as what you want”
you have already lost.

I’m waiting for lab created diamonds to gain extreme popularity. It will for somebody’s generation. Crazy how diamonds are only expensive because we perceive them to be.

No .. and I'm a woman saying NO. I have my original ring but just celebrated our 30th anniversary. We don't normally do "gifts" but this year he got a really nice guitar and I got a really nice ring that I'll always remember was to celebrate 30 years.
BUT a band for the first year? No. Just no.

I'm not making the move yet, but I asked everyone about family rings / diamonds. One of ours is 3/4 a carat, but it escaped Lithuania in my great grandmother's dress when the Nazis took over. That's fricking badass
My only question is IF you use that as an engagement ring and Lord forbid there's a breakup, who does the ring go to??? I wouldn't want to lose a family piece like that.
That IS a great story.

If you can, pay in cash. I got 3,000 off the retail because I said I would buy it on the spot with cash. They will negotiate if they get their hands on the money that day.

About 5-6 years ago I was basically in the same “have to buy a big diamond” situation and about all the I knew about diamond rings was they were priced outrageously.
I got online looking and at first looked at Blue Nile but a couple days later I found Ritani online and that ended up being a good thing. Researched cut, clarity, color and caret size, I ended up buying a stunningly beautiful ring for less than half the price of anything I had looked at in jewelry stores. It came with a diamond certification and appraisal value. I had it checked by a local jeweler and he actually appraised it higher, it’s beautiful and my wife loves it.

You should find a way to ask her if she even wants a diamond.
My wife basically told me, "Diamonds are a dumb tradition." So I went with a teal sapphire and she absolutely loves the ring.

Diamonds have between 500% and 1000% mark-up because they last forever.

if people knew the evils of the diamond trade, they would only buy lab grown diamonds. lab grown is the exact same thing. just grown in a lab versus naturally in the earth.

Diamonds are marked up between 5 and 10 times up because they last forever.

Same can be said for many things where supply is regulated. Rolexs are similar ( I own them), they offer great quality despite being mass produced. Inventory is controlled, thus increases the demand and drives up the price.

But the average woman sees a pre-owned diamond as almost worthless.

I do it for every piece of jewelry I buy my wife. Use the local jeweler who’s been here forever. #1, I always pay with CASH. #2, I’m pretty loyal to him for jewelry.
#3, $20K for an engagement ring is dumb. If ya still married in 20 yrs then get her a $20K upgrade.
