I have two Seikos and love them. Good value.

I wear a cheap seiko automatic, originally a 4r36 movement, on the 3rd movement (now NH36), they don’t like shock or rough behavior. It keeps accurate time though, until i notice it’s stopped.
think I’ve had this watch 5-6 yrs.

Obtuse if you still check the watch thread I posted an older sub and mother of pearls rolexes I came across. Trying to get some info on them. I also have a bunch of older omega watches I came across I'll be posted pics of soon

Get an ORIS
Same quality as Rolex, was opened 1 year after Rolex & fraction of the price.
Look into this company and quality, I’ve got one and have a Rolex. And I cannot tell the difference to be honest.

If you don't know what you are doing, then don't spend a bunch of money at this point. My recommendation is to spend no more than $1K, and preferably a lot less , on a dive watch. Get one that has a black face, is conservatively styled, between 38-42mm, with a metal bracelet. You mentioned Seikos, which would not be a bad option. Note that you can buy affordable aftermarket bracelets for the ones that come with rubber straps.

I have a Seiko SSK001 GMT that I wear more than any other watch I have. I love it.

I have been taking a time out from it. I had gotten self-conscious about posting so many I felt it had gotten boorish. I did see the post and will look back at it later. I remember not really knowing anything about the MOP dials but will take another look at the sub later tonight.

JLC reverso
Used can be very affordable. Service won’t be though.

Citizen and Orient would be alternatives to Seiko. Citizen makes a titanium dive watch that is solar powered that would be worth a look. Conservative enough for the office and a no fuss movement.

This one is about right for a Seiko: LINK By that I mean that it looks like a Seiko should look (they have a certain style) and is not extreme and therefore hard to wear. Note that it is a solar movement. That's a plus in my book after growing weary of dealing with mechanicals, but many prefer a mechanical movement.

I think it makes sense to buy a Seiko or some other similarly priced brand. I don’t see the point in spending big bucks on a watch that isn’t distinctive looking or isn’t one of the elite brands. And in your case you don’t even know if you want to wear a watch, so you might even try a cheapo watch from Amazon just to start with. Find one that looks good and don’t worry about the brand name.

Laugh as much as you want. My watches have appreciated as least as much as my equities portfolio.

Ordered the Seiko ssk0001. Thanks for all the responses. Going to keep researching the higher end watches and see if it keeps my interest before jumping in too deep
