I have a Seiko Black Monster and I love it.

I also have this Seiko that I wear on the weekends:

You could swap out the band for metal or leather and dress it up.

I also have this Orient that I really like:

Nice looking watch. Never really looked at Seiko before.

For the money, seikos are awesome. They last forever.

Broke, how does a black monster look on a nato/zulu?

Probably not like a dress watch someone would use for work.

Anyone else have this problem? Are there better metal watch bands that don't pose this problem? I usually just wear the leather bands, but they wear out faster and don't look as nice, IMO.

I'm not sure how dressy you want the strap to be, but I typically wear my watch on a NATO, unless I have an important meeting or something.

Didn't look it up but I'm pretty sure that Breitling is out of my $300 price range.

I recently picked up a Hamilton King Auto on a bracelet for $359, which would be a good buy if you can stretch your budget a bit.

You just going to go to the mall and buy a watch aren't you?

good work watch

I'm going to say that the correct answer can certainly vary greatly based on the actual work being done.
