Lots of pertinent info. Great thread. Budget? Year models you're looking at? New? Used? Need for 7 seats?

give us a little idea of what you are planning to use the vehicle for and your lifestyle...(i.e. city driving or highway?, offroad?, kids?, etc.)

Anything but a Toyota. Toyotas are reliable, but are the most boring automobiles to drive ever created. I start crying ever time I get behind the wheel of my wife's Avalon. I sometimes wish she'd run me over with it. It's mind numbing how unenjoyable driving Toyotas are. Pretty sure everyone in hell has a Toyota.

I hated the Camry we had, drove like a complete POS. My manual transmissioned Tacoma is very fun to drive. I think I'd go 4 runner over anything else.

Do you really need a SUV or you just want to be cool and have one?
If it is a need what will you do with it?

Xterra. Had mine since 2005. OR model or bust.... have loved it since day 1. But the new TRD 4runners that haven't been released yet are bitchin.

I definitely wouldn't....especially not the diesel model.
It's not a Tahoe, but it's just a better all round vehicle than the 4Runner. That will be made obvious on a test drive.

I know dude, automobiles aren't supposed to be an appliance, but Toyota surely succeeds at doing just that.

The 4Runner probably isn't that boring. We considered one not long ago. It's kind of basic in design but the front end styling is weird. Some people like the big fenders and bulgy plastics I guess.
I prefer the older 4Runners. They are sturdy and good off road. Definitely not a bad vehicle all around.
