Sounds like a dumb question but...

I'm replacing the valve cover on my old car. I've got a new cork gasket, but the head was just worked on, so the "old" gasket is practically brand new. It's rubber and mine is cork. Should I leave the old one on there or replace with the cork?

Rubber

Cork

I wasn't sure if I should just always replace regardless. I was thinking the rubber one was superior quality to the cork one.

Definitely go with the cork cause that blue is a pretty color.

When I've messed with valve covers, I've skipped the cork entirely and just used the tube of stuff from autozone. (ask at the counter, they'll point you to the right tube...)

ETA- congrats to you for working on your own car though.

Use the cork one. The rubber one has stress lines and cracks you can't see that will fail sooner than the cork one.

For a valve cover it probably doesnt really matter. Both works fine.

I don't know what engine that is, but the cork gasket on my CJ7 always leaked.

Use a new rubber gasket. There is a reason the cork gaskets are found in the Ultta low priced gasket sets.

Whichever you go with do not over tighten the bolts. They should only be around 25-30 inch pounds.

Yeah. I don't have a torque wrench. I was wondering about that.

New rubber would be superior, hands down. The reason for this is that it compresses better than cork. If you over tighten the cork, it will split. Try to tighten fron the middle out, as evenly as you can. I use permatex between the cover and gasket, essentially gluing the gasket to the cover. Then a thin coat of silicone on the gasket before you mate it to the head.

Biggest thing is to not over tighten the bolts. If you do it right, they just don't have to be very tight. If you see gasket squeezing out under the bolt, you've probably over tightened it.

Tighten them from the middle out in either direction, also. The ones on the end should be last.

I guess I'll be buying a rubber one and a torque wrench and replacing it again.
