He often sits out there and reads or fishes with a long rod and never catches anything while he drinks scotch.

He loves music (Springsteen on repeat ) so I was thinking a portable music player so he can play music out there?

Any other ideas? I thought about a cool, antique oil lamp and get him some oil for when he goes out there for a night cap, but wasn't sure that would even be useful/efficient enough to use.

Any other ideas?

ETA:

Old school guy, but hardly a roughneck/redneck. Has lots of antiques at the house, especially antique guns and fishing equipment, which is where I got the lamp idea.

Instead of an oil lamp look for a old school Coleman Lantern. You can find some great stuff on ebay.

My dad has a nice automatic fish feeder on his pier.

Now the water thrashes at feeding time and the fish are plentiful to catch.

I know nothing about fishing but wouldn't music NOT be a helpful thing if he'd actually like to catch fish??

I have gotten my father in law gifts in this realm before. Most recently I got him a Beats Pill and he loves it. Also have gotten him an engraved cigar lighter and an ash tray.
