A few quick thoughts

1) this data confirms something interesting: it’s NOT simply that millennials don’t have kids because of money worries, it’s also a case that the very notion of parenthood/raising children is unattractive to them, regardless of finances. What’s up with that?

2) Younger generations love to accuse the olds of intolerance, but the data in this survey shows not much of a difference in value of tolerating others

3) thinking of mass shootings lately and how so much mental illness is driven by lack of meaning, it’s disheartening that 3 huge potential sources of purpose/meaning in life- children, love of country, religion- have collapsed in value for younger generation

4) the collapse in patriotism is interesting. Millennials have large numbers of first and second generation immigrants in their ranks. In the old days, immigrants were among the most patriotic. Vietnamese and Cubans are 2 powerful examples. Given that, it’s surprising that millennials don’t value patriotism.

Millenials came of age during the Iraq War and subsequent recession, so not surprising in the least.

Boomers were still fairly young during Vietnam, 1970s economic stagflation, didn’t affect their levels of patriotism

I'm 49 and I see I'm gonna have to find a way to arm myself if I ever have to stay in a nursing home. I don't trust these little shits these days. Gonna be worse when I'm older.

Social media has created a whole different false world for the younger generation.

Full of friends and relationships that aren’t really real, inflating the value of people above what it actually is.

Unfettered access to social media and content creation is a dangerous game for the continuation of society

This is true of every generation...also people value free speech as long as they agree with what is said

Whereas millenials say they want tolerance, but really want hard line acceptance.

2 observations.

1) I know a guy in his late 70's. Owned a marketing firm so he was constantly turning over PR people. they were usually fresh out of school. He had run this place for like 40 years (think Roger Sterling). "Everyone talks about these goddamn millenials. They are the same type of shite head I delt with for 40 years. The only things that change are their names. The attitudes are the same. Basically, young people are fricking worthless until they get older"

2) Listened to the Rewatchables podcast on The Town a few days ago. Rusilo ended on a really interesting story about Boston during the revolution. "The boston militia was shite, (according to this book he was reading) most didnt have muskets and they were just big and ornery. Well in comes the militia from Virginia. In pristine Linen uniforms armed to the teeth. Apparently the guys from boston kept throwing snowballs at the VA militia guys and did the whole, "you think you're better than me?" thing.

What am I trying to say with respect to that study? That its bullshite. We all value different things at different times in our life and the one constant is DNA. Thats it.

Talk to some Vietnam veterans about that patriotism they experienced when returning and getting spat on at airports.

Still are. I know a dude who came here as a child and fairly recently got his citizenship.

He'll frick you up if you demean his country.

The ones born between 1946 - 1952 did a lot of the fighting during Vietnam. What are you talking about?

Just have to chuckle at a poll that seriously grouped 18 year olds and 38 year olds together as if they share anything in common.
