Why did they put a basketball court on the back end of a warship?
I know we are really trying to encourage physical activity these days, but that seems unnecessary.

Yeah I thought they looked pretty light on weapons systems. But I figured they got missile defense systems somewhere in there.

What are we doing in the mean time though? As far as I know, rail guns that can chunk 2000lb shells 20+ miles for a whole day aren't close to being in service yet.

We had a basketball goal on the flight deck on our boat. Lot of basketballs were seen floating in the Med that summer.

It has been a long time and the strength of the US Navy is a big reason for that.
I'm not some pro-war lunatic, and I think there is a ton of wasteful spending in the military, but I don't have much issue with spending money on the Navy.

Idk. I'm no military scholar. I just imagine that if we ever need to put large amounts of infantry and hardware in an occupied country again it would be necessary.

Are guided missles going to get the job done if there's a heavily defended beach and we don't have complete air superiority over the landing site? Is the whole thing hopeless without total air superiority anyway?

Surface ships and submarines can launch guided missiles as well... you don't have to rely completely on air superiority.
