How??? As a teenager(I assume)can you fail any PT test???

Only element of any PT test I didn't pass was the 100m swim for Delta Tryout Qualification.
Back in the 90's I had a few of my soldiers want to give it a go, so I was obligated to participate.
Try swimming 100m (for time) in full BDU's and boots... I got a little over halfway and sank like a stone when I ran out of gas.

Apparently, this relaxing of physical requirements has been going on for a while. This is from an article talking about it in 2016.
I guess this would never happen today.

Sit ups have never been my strong point - ever. I will admit that as a kid, and mostly like now - my core is not great and never has been. it is noones fault but my own, and I did try as best as my body would allow, at the time. the pushups and running were never an issue at all - i excelled in those, but Sit-ups were my arch enemy.
I could lie and say it was a back issue, or something like that - but it wasn't, it was just me and my body just not being as prepared for sit-ups as I thought.
I learned a tremendous amount about myself during Basic, and I am a far better person for the experiences in Basic. even went through the Gas Chamber and got tear gassed - fun times there.
had I passed Basic, I was already scheduled to go to class/training to be a Fireman on a Guided Missle Frigate.
if nothing else, my experiences made me respect those that did make it and serve that much more - including my dad, and my now FIL.

You failed at the navy? Dear lord, man…

I guess so - I own and acknowledge my failure in that regard - but if it makes you feel better to have a laugh at my expense, feel free to.

You were quite an anomaly. Run is usually the event that gets most people followed by push ups. The ones that cant hit those marks may also struggle w situps too. In 24 yrs I dont remember anyone w multiple fails for situps alone. Maybe it's more common w recruits than once they pass and hit units.

Word.
Not everyone is a door-kicker or has to charge a hill with a ruck.
In my 26 years in, I've learned that commander's discretion would be fantastic, especially in a highly technical career field. I can't make a guy that scores a 100 into a test flight engineer with decades of experience and 8k flying hours. And I don't need my FE to do the 1.5 mi run in 11:00.
I was president of a discharge board kicking an awesome crewmember to the curb after 20 years because of a nagging injury that he had hid from the flight docs to continue to be on flying status. His leadership was trying to take care of him, because they wanted to keep him, but they couldn't and he got kicked. Sucked and was stupid.

wtf does it matter if i can do 60 pushups
Oh, I don’t know…. maybe your ship takes a hypersonic missile into the side and blows up a third of your ship, possibly putting you in a position to be able to drag some of your wounded shipmates to safety from the ensuing fire rather than watch them burn alive because your overweight, weak Cheetohs eating arse didn’t maintain the physical standards our military forces set as a minimum?
Just a thought…
