Natural Gas Bill For IDA
Running a 17 year old 35kw Generac whole home generator. Lost power at 8:15pm on August 29th and Got it back 11:15am Sunday September 5th. There was most likely a period of 18 hours when the generator was not running due to a broken pulley wheel and battery issues. Gas bill was $477.26 it usually runs $55.00/ month during this time so $422.26 for 141 hours of run time. Also burnt 12 quarts of 10w-30 oil and 3 oil filters and one new battery and charger for the generator. All in roughly $775.00. How did everyone else do?

Better than some, not as well as others.

Thanks for asking.

Would running it like 12 hours a day instead of 24 have been better?

That 35KW water cooled will suck down some gas. My 30KW Onan does too. It takes a lot more displacement to produce 35KW at 1800 rpms than it does to produce 20 KW at 3600 rpms!

I didn’t loose power long enough for mine to even warm up. So I have no real data. She started a few times because of some extended blinks but never took a load. Halfway through I went and turned the key on my transfer switch to manual.

It would have been cheaper for sure! But then I would not been able to run the flood lights at night and piss off the neighbors that did not have a generator!

Portable 8000/10000 watts generator and spent $550 on gas for 210 hours of use. Mostly ran it at night and a few hours each day. Out of power for 12 days.

May have been better on the pocketbook, but not on comfort. My wife would shite a brick of we lost power and I tried to pull that one.

Then be glad it isn’t a straight 6 1800 rpm! My gas meter spins like Clark Griswalds electric meter when it test runs under load. Thankfully I since I got it we have only had a few 4 or 5 hour outages. I’m waiting to see how expensive it is to run in an extended outage.

According to the manual it says it will burn 600 cf an hour at full load.

same here with the help of my go to for hurricanes, vodka.

Also we disconnected the entergy for gas service to the house years ago. Hot water heater is electric. We used gas central heat like 1% of the year when it gets that cold so it was more trouble than it was worth. Also we don’t get to use our fireplace but big deal.

That is about half of what Entergy charges for my typical bill. I usually run about 10-15 dollars a day in the summer.

Spring or Fall days can be under 5 dollars.
