I was about to post a link to that Slate article. This comes up often. Some people get fighting mad when you call bullshite, citing grandma's high cheek bones and raven hair. (It's always grandma, never grandpa. And it's almost always Cherokee.)

Here's another article on this topic:

The Cherokee Princess Myth

quote:

My great-great-grandmother was a Cherokee Indian princess!

How many of you have heard a similar statement made by one of your relatives? As soon as you hear that "princess" label, the red warning flags should go up. While they are sometimes true, stories of Native American ancestry in the family tree are often more fiction than fact.

You should really read up on statistical noise from DNA testing.. people just love to harp on the low percentage regions though because they want to come off as more exotic than they are.

American Indians were conquered, got their teeth kicked down their throats, and now get to suck up tax free Casino cash.

My grandma was on the rolls of the Poarch creek indians.

She used to get $5,000 on her birthday from them, and she was only a 1/4.

That indian money is somethin serious.

I'm pretty sure I have some Native American ancestry in my blood, but I couldn't care less. I'm damn proud of my western European roots.

What is the fascination about having Native American ancestory?About every other person I talk to wants to make that claim.

I also wonder if this issue is a bit generational. I definitely know my parents/aunts/uncles and grandparents would mention things about Native American ancestry, but almost never hear peers talk about it. The only peers I know who bring up their Native American ancestry are ones that actually active at pow-wows and tribal gatherings. Maybe Millennials & Gen Z/Centennials care less about unsubstantiated ancestral claims, or maybe we've grown up with a less-than-positive view of the "noble savage" idea.

I can say, with first-hand knowledge, that people who claim have direct ties to Pocahontas will tell you without prompt. They're like the vegans of the genealogy world.

Was watching one of those shows on ID channel, and it was about this 20 year old, who was getting Indian money, and they said he was getting close to 80K a year.

His mother was White, father Native american, with connections to main peeps in tribe.
