NASA's Messenger space probe has crashed into Mercury after running out of fuel, ending a nearly 11-year journey that provided valuable data and photos.
The agency estimates the probe hit the surface at 8,750 miles per hour and created an impact crater 52 feet (16 meters) in diameter. The crash wasn't visible from Earth because it occurred on the far side of Mercury.
Messenger was the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury, the planet closest to the sun. It traveled about 5 billion miles -- a journey that included 15 trips around the sun.

So we can build something that doesn't run out of fuel for 11 years yet drive cars with 15 mpg? WTF 5 billion miles on one tank!

Why not just call it "Mercury"?
Too Roman?
Too Roman?

And we will very shortly be attacked by a bunch of pissed off Mercunions who think we shot a missile at them.
Think about how we would react if someone sent something to earth that created a 52 foot crater at 8,750 miles per hour.

Joking right?

I realize it's a total different concept dipper. Just the initial thrust into space would go on forever until it crashed.

it was travelling at an extreme rate of speed, therefore better fuel efficiency
fricking duh

Meh. I've made 32.

Too obvious. Mercury was the messenger of the gods though.

Ya but this thing was travelling thru space at over 50,000 miles an hour.....

...and still traveled for 11 years.

this is exactly how intergalactic wars start.

Do you even Kepler bro?

If we extrapolate the driving at 100 mph saves more fuel than driving at 70 mph equation, then the Messenger probe used the perfect amount of fuel

Actually, based on this equation, Messenger crashed because it was overloaded with the fuel it created by traveling so fast.
