It is a mathematical certainty that we are not alone.

Here is a video of former Canadian defense minister interview talking about the existence of known aliens.

Or is this guy just a kook too?

I can't wait for this. And these aliens better share the warp drive technology with us when we find them.
Probably not the best thing to find intelligent life with out space travel capabilities.

We wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell.

I believe there is life on other planets but I don't believe we will ever see it. NASA must be looking for funding.

Aren't we supposed to be made in GOD's likeness or something?

What if we find a super race of Pizza The Huts?

I believe that intelligent life has existed elsewhere

I'm skeptical if it still exists

just think how old the universe is, and how small of a timeframe we have been around

entire worlds could have began and been destroyed and we could still have missed them by a BILLION years

Then we'd be superior.

Yeah, what religion is contingent on there NOT being aliens?

Scientology I think is contingent upon their being a specific kind of alien, so I could see how they'd be disproven.

But I've often thought, the first thing we should ask any aliens (once we've built our universal translators) is "have you heard of Jesus Christ?" If they say yes, that settles it. But if they say no, doesn't that settle it too?

Was it Carl Sagan that predicted that we would be squashed like ants if we ever encountered a race advanced enough to travel interstellar distances?

ETA: It was Hawkings:
quote:

"If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans," he said. "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet."

Exciting, but even though there's a small chance of finding what NASA calls "life" on other planets, it's an even smaller chance that the life they find is close to as intelligent as humans. There may be some living organisms out there that havent evolved to intelligence yet.

No, it is a mathematical near-certainty that "life" exists somewhere else in the universe. The nature and complexity of that life, whether or not it's what we'd characterize as "intelligent" life, and whether or not those intelligent species still exist are other matters
altogether. Human development and evolution were facilitated by a number of fortunate accidents that may or may not have played out in other systems. Theoretically, we could have destroyed ourselves over the past 70 years or so. We still could within the next decade.

How does NASA plan to accomplish this? They'll be lucky just to launch a probe to one of Jupiter's or Saturn's moons at the current pace.

Not a difficult assessment to make considering that our techonology is orders of magnitude from enabling interstellar travel. But who knows, maybe they wouldn't be able to adapt to our environment or would be killed off by our germs.

It will affect spirituality, not religion.

you do know the difference between religion which is just like a country club, and spirituality which is like a romantic relationship.
