We call it Razor City because it's a seedy place. And it seems like half the town has the last name Gore, Grainger, Todd or Fowler.

Is Tabor City still the sweet potato capital? I always find it funny that people don’t believe NC is an agricultural powerhouse. Number one producer (or used to be) of lumber, textiles, turkeys, tobacco, sweet potatoes, and pork.

Tabor City is the yam capital of the world. Chadbourn is the strawberry capital of the world. Fair Bluff is the watermelon capital of the world. At least that's what they say lol.

Old baw I worked for (surname of Prince) had an old tobacco farm that he converted in to mostly blueberries and a smattering of other fruits and veggies. That acidic pine soil made for some hellacious berry bushes.

I remember digging about two miles of 3'x'3' trenches to mark his property line and install irrigation. If it wasn't for my shitty 1st gen iPod full of John Prine, I probably would have walked off and given up.

That's an old name. Common in Tabor, more common in Loris and Green Sea across the state line here in SC.

You've probably seen his place - if you're coming from the west, it's the first big house (not sure if it's antebellum or not) on the north side of the road right before you hit town on 64. Nice guy, even if he claims to be a wizard.

I grew up in the Deep South and moved to the NC mountains about a decade ago. It’s heaven up here and as much as I love the Deep South, I have zero desire to ever live there again. I really think NC, TN, VA and KY area is like the sweet spot of this part of the country.

Appalachia is truly God's country - forget the Negev, give me the rolling hills, creeks, and critters of America's first frontier.

True. Growing up on a rich subirb there must be nice. A funky beach town on Friday is hard to beat .

Much of that spirit remains today. It takes a certain type of person to leave the comforts of modern America and move to rural Appalachia. Tonight at our town hall, people were complaining that the local power company were expanding internet into their holler without their consent. They didn’t want or need it, they said.

Oh and Mrs. Lambert is missing a cow.

I’ve lived many places, but my time in Durham was the best. Absolutely my favorite city I’ve lived in.

I loved living in NC. But I will say Georgia is great for many of the same reasons.

Was up there for work a few years back. People were polite, they take pride in not littering, and there is plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities.

I love NC. I would move out in one of those areas with a general store. Go to a larger town once a month for other provisions. The only thing stopping me is winters. The first day I'd try to drive in snow, I'd skid off the side of the mountain. And I hate the cold.
